The Pecos Eagles, underdogs for the Odessa regional final, face Orion after a season of tough luck and late injuries. Writers note Pecos often ranks low before seasons end yet finishes high, and fans plan to attend the regional tilt with high hopes.
Santa Claus will visit Pecos for a 4 30 parade led by the Pecos High School band to inaugurate the 1939 Christmas season. He will greet hundreds of children from Pecos and nearby towns, distribute candy, and hear holiday wishes. The event is organized by the Chamber of Commerce with Manager Swinehart coordinating details.
A 1940 cotton allotment of 5779.7 acres for Reeves County was announced by the county agent. The figure shows a slight drop from 1939 due to more new farm land. New farmers must notify the county committee by Jan. 15 to obtain 1940 allotments through the AAA program.
Pecos high school alumni plan the annual ball for December 21 at the Oasis Ballroom with Ray McNeil and his orchestra. Alumni meetings at the Brandon Hotel 7 15 p m set details and invite all graduates to attend. Funds beyond expenses go to Pecos high school band for El Paso Sun Carnival and New Year’s Day expenses.
Work will begin in spring 1940 on five miles of U S Highway 285 in Reeves County. An appropriation of 12 200 will fund relocation of 12 000 of work from Terrell County to the Pecos Stockton road due to right of way issues. District Engineer R E Killmer will prepare plans and start upon completion.
Pecos Eagles travel to Odessa for the Class A Region 2 championship clash with undefeated Orton Mustangs. Pecos counters Olton’s 175 pound twins Willis and Willard Hedges and relies on passes and end sweeps to offset the weight advantage. Frank Medanich and Cole Armstrong return to lead a hopeful, near full-strength team as fans pack Odessa for the high-stakes regional final.
Pecos fire chief Charley Manahan traced the department’s origins to 1905 in Judge Will Brady’s office. He described early chiefs, equipment evolution from two wheel hand hoses to modern gear, changing firefighting methods, and Pecos holding up to 25 percent fire insurance credit for low losses. Dr. Bryan Lackey led the Lions Club meeting in the president’s absence.
Mr and Mrs Jess Grammer welcomed a baby boy Thursday morning their second child both mother and son reported doing nicely.
A 1939 Football Queen will be chosen Tuesday night at the high school auditorium from 17 contestants. Tickets sold since Friday raise funds by penny votes, with a 30 minute band concert led by Wesley C. May before the ceremony at 7:30. Co captains Griffin and Medanich will coin toss for the football king, queen identity revealed at crowning.
Fort Worth Fine Arts Association’s inaugural Texas art show features 60 works by Texas artists. Mrs. Alex D. Haynes of Pecos has two paintings in the exhibit, a West Texas landscape titled West of the Pecos and a portrait titled Meditation. The exhibit runs through December 23 after a Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce dinner honoring the artists.
Oasis Ballroom announces five holiday dances this season with two before Christmas, a Christmas night event, and two after. Harrison's Texans, a West Texas orchestra, play Saturday night December 23 and German dance on Sunday December 24 starting at noon. Hank McCurdy and his Lubbock musicians perform Christmas dance Monday December 25, and again Saturday December 30, plus a second German Sunday December 31 starting at midnight.
The Texas state executive committee upheld a Pecos Wink McCamey Kermit and Monahans 7 A ruling disqualifying Wink for one year or until the rule infractions are cleared. Wink may regain eligibility if the district plus state committee agree the issue is resolved by 1940.
Mr and Mrs J E Hudgens of Barstow welcomed a baby girl born at their home on Saturday. The announcement notes the parents and location without additional details.
Reports from Red Bluff Dam show strong fishing with good catches. Dr. Jim Camp fished Wednesday and returned a string of bass and catfish, many weighing two to three pounds.
A son born to Mr and Mrs Howard Brown in a Pecos sanitarium was named John Howard Brown in a brief birth notice naming the new arrival and parents.
Congressman R. E. Thomason of El Paso will be guest of honor at a Barstow event hosted by the Chamber of Commerce at the Green Gable Tuesday evening December 19 at 7. Accommodations are limited and reservations should go through Secretary M. L. Swinehart. The 50 cent dinner precedes Thomason's public address, his first Pecos appearance in some time, to be broadcast on Radio Station KIM. He is touring West Texas with stops in Midland Alpine Sanderson and nearby towns. Captain Swinehart will present Thomason.
Rotarians stage The Drunkard tonight at 8 in Pecos Grand Theatre as a Rotary Club charity revue. Proceeds support Christmas charity in Pecos and defray band costs for the El Paso Sun Carnival. An all star Hollywood cast revives P T Barnum's 1843 melodrama with Ralph Williams and Bob Dean in lead roles.
