The Wink Wildcats disqualification sparked controversy and rumor. Pecos officials moved to replace the cancelled Wink contest with Slaton after a poster program error, delays, and last minute roster information.
Pecos shows a 1939 finish with a flood of new homes remodeling jobs and business buildings. Three lumber yards report total construction around 50 000 with six new residences listed in town and nearby areas. Homes underway include Pryor Beauchamp Young Ragsdale Farnum and Youngblood farms plus Safe Way Store building by Mrs Mary Sparks and J L Cunningham. Final yard totals: Foxworth Galbraith 23000 Nagel 12000 Higginbotham 9200.
Sherley Ann Glasscock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Glasscock, chosen Pecos princess for the Sun Carnival in El Paso on January 1. A Pecos high school senior, she will ride in the Sun Carnival parade and compete among visiting princesses. The Pecos band also will participate, funded by Rotary show proceeds at Grand Theatre next Friday.
Pecos gains a new business with the opening Monday of Ez-Way Laundry in the Pace building formerly occupied by Tri-State Equipment Co. Owner J. E. Wright and Mrs Wright relocated from Lubbock. The facility features a water softener and ten washers with tubs and will run on a helpy selfy basis.
Balmorhea leaders and Pecos officials met at a Balmorhea Chamber dinner. Senator H. L. Winfield and Rep. James H. Goodman spoke alongside Capt. M. L. Swinehart. Pecos committee members Debated Balmorhea State Park post CCC and a proposed Trans-Pecos organization for regional communities.
In Austin last weekend four District 7-A representatives certified Pecos as the official 7-A champion for the 1939 season. Pecos Supt. R Henry Blackwell did not certify the team, while Pecos received confirmations from Monahans McCamey Crane and Kermit school officials.
West Texas hunters revive a community bear hunt once led by Beau McCutcheon Bill Kingston and Doug Coulson. Duncan Kingston and John Oates organize a trip with nine hunting dogs from Madera Springs Lodge. Eighteen hunters will depart Sunday morning December 17 after a Saturday night stay, with horses saddles and reservations via John Oates at Badmorhea.
ECOS prepares festively as Pecos residents light displays for a Chamber of Commerce contest. Entrants must notify by noon December 16, with lighting up by 6 pm and lit from 7 to 10 pm daily through Christmas. Jury by Women’s Federated Club Lions Club and Rotary Club. First prize 10 dollars, second 5 dollars.
West Texas hunters entered a tight window of quail season almost half over as of this week. The season began December 1 and runs to January 16, 1940 per Game Warden Curtis McElroy. Fishing season follows May 1. McElroy notes fewer quail than usual in the Trans-Pecos, though several hunters have already reached their limit.
Mr and Mrs Kenneth Richards welcomed son Kenneth Lea in Pecos Hospital on Wednesday evening Both mother and baby Kenneth Lea are reported to be doing well The event marks the family’s first child and a future football position at Pecos High School for 1955 confirmation of the newborn and its role on the team.
Pecos will host the 16th district semi annual American Legion convention next spring with Pecos Post Commander Ira R. Titus and Post Adjutant Dewey Richburg responsible for planning. An entertainment committee will be named and organizers seek broad town cooperation for a standout event. Congressman R. E. Thomason spoke at the Sanderson gathering on neutrality and armament, recalling his El Paso mayoral visit with Gold Star Mothers. The Pecos district reaches east to Big Lake and Midland and west to El Paso.
The Texas highway department advertised for bids to build 5.65 miles of highway from Pecos to the Pecos River and from Toyah east. Sealed proposals are due at the state highway department in Austin by 9 o clock December 19 and will be opened publicly. Work includes 1.5 miles of widening Pecos to the Pecos River bridge and 4.1 miles of grading drainage and a double asphalt base starting at Toyah and heading east.
Approximately 100 attend a venison beef barbecue for the Pecos Lodge No 388 Knights of Pythias at the American Legion Hall. The roll call shows over 90 members present or accounted for. the lodge counts about 130 members. A collection for the K P Orphans Home at Weatherford raises over $30. After adjournment attendees enjoy games.
Johnson of Wink public schools protests District 7-A executive committee action in Pecos over disqualifying Wink Wildcats. He cites ineligible players based on elementary school ties and IL rules, claims unfairness and details student work for meals and portering roles, while stressing the school’s right to keep students.
El Paso visitors Howard Maxon Herb Halladay and Frank Jonell meet Pecos youths at Brandon Hotel to discuss forming a 20 30 club. The civic service group aims to build intelligent citizenship and community service through local youth engagement.
Congressman R. E. Thomason from El Paso says he will visit Pecos soon with a dinner and public reception in planning. Details on time and schedule will be announced later.
Pecos Rotarians plan grease paint performance of The Drunkard next Friday night in Carnegie Library basement to raise funds for local Christmas charity. Proceeds fund Pecos High School band expenses for the Sun Carnival in El Paso on January 1.
Pecos high school Eagles travel to Brady for a 1939 bi district football clash to decide the champion with a 2:30 kickoff. The winner advances to regional play against Roscoe Orton winner while Pecos outlines a strong lineup and possible return of Cole Armstrong. A 2:15 KIUN radio broadcast will provide play by play.
The annual Christmas Seals sale starts this week in Pecos with red seals distributed by schoolchildren to fund tuberculosis fight. Mrs. Clarence Bell urges no armistice in the battle until disease is conquered and notes the campaign relies on public support.
