Congressman R E Thomason of El Paso spoke at a dinner in his honor outlining issues facing America. He urged keeping the nation out of war, enforcing the neutrality act, building a strong defense, and deporting aliens illegally in the country. He supported jail for anyone advocating overthrow of the American government.
Uncle Sam sends 89 checks totaling 1052.97 to Reeves County farmers as part of 1937 price adjustments and additional anticipated payments. Secretary Miss Marjorie Smart welcomed the funds while Rep. Thomason spoke on local development and fairness in federal programs.
Pecos merchants report strong sales as last minute shoppers flock to stores ahead of Christmas. Religious services unfold across churches with cantatas and pageants while Rotary and Lions Club aid the needy. Firemen and Boy Scouts prepare to repair toys for poorer children as holiday lights brighten downtown.
Club members sent Santa requests read aloud by Guy Walker at the Lions Club lunch. Items include gifts such as a new wig and tonic, a theatre pass, a doll, a football primer, and a yard stick, with oddball wishes noted by multiple members.
A Finnish relief movement begins in Pecos with residents contributing a dollar each. More than 20 dollars is collected for the Hoover national campaign and sent to The Enterprise office for matching funds. Anthony and Tubb reported this week cattle sales to A B Tinnin 60 steer calves to W L Beckham 30 mixed calves and to L A Weinach 8 bulls.
A Thursday morning blast six miles east of Barstow injured two men fatally and critically harmed another while seven travelers en route to California searched for work. The explosion, from dynamite or caps, burned faces and left a two by three foot crater.
Red Graham suffered a broken shoulder and two other cowboys were bruised when a truck overturned on the Grandfalls highway about a mile from Pecos. A load of horses owned by H. F. Anthony were injured in the Sunday night accident.
Rotary Club staged P. T. Barnum's The Drunkard at Grand Theatre before a capacity crowd. Bob Dean won acting honors as Edward Midleton, with Ralph Williams as Mary and Raymon Pouncey pivotal in the plot.
Pecos schools ended classes Thursday afternoon for a 12 day holiday over Christmas and New Year. Christmas trees, presents and closing exercises marked the start of holiday activities at 1 p m. Most faculty depart for home this week with classes resuming Tuesday Jan 2.
The T A T Oil Co resumes drilling in anhydrite at 650 feet in Sec 10, Block 59, PSL Reeves County after stopping water influx. Drillers expect problems resolved. permit allows drilling to 3300 feet. Russell Byall serves as driller. A light showing occurred between 71 and 80 feet amid ongoing water trouble.
Spurgeon Gaskin and Stan ley Mate visited Pecos for a planning luncheon with local leaders. Pecos Troops 67 and 68 report growth under Lions and Rotary sponsorship as they prepare for the Big Spring round up on January 18.
