Pecos residents confronted a second freezing day as a giant ice storm swept across Texas. Freezing drizzle and sleet dropped temperatures, halting travel from Pecos to Dallas and beyond, with hundreds of accidents and widespread hazardous conditions.
Reeves County deposited 3,102,512 in a special revenue sharing trust fund the first of two fiscal 1972 installments. Checks were mailed to about 36,000 state and local bodies with Reeves County receiving 2,205,024 plus 32,080 in reserve. The next check should arrive in January and will be deposited as a six month CD. County plans no specific fund expenditures yet.
City police handled several minor crashes at Third Street intersections with Cypress and Oak. Names include Mary Frances Galindo and Susan Sierks Pruett among drivers, with multiple incidents at Third and Oak and Third and Cypress. A hit and run at Third and Cypress and a separate vehicle striking a pole near West Oho Street are noted. A court-ruled delay is cited in an unrelated case, and a Dec 18 bid meeting for a dump truck chassis is announced.
Pecos Chamber of Commerce tourism committee moves to remove highway advertising signs along U S 285 17 and U S 80 at its last meeting Harold Meyer was directed to obtain a state license permit and bond for a large sign seven miles west of the 120 and 110 junction in Jeff Davis County to comply with a new state law The committee also agrees to join other towns to form the Pecos Trails Association to promote travel Chairman John Rediger presided over the meeting.
Former President Harry S Truman, 88, remained in serious condition at Research Hospital and Medical Center in Kansas City. Doctors reported irregular heart rhythm but said he felt all right when asked Sunday night and spent a restful night. A morning bulletin noted no pain on his body and a next update was planned for 10 p.m. EST.
Firefighters were called to the Severo Jaquez residence at 801E Ninth St at 9 08 am. Fire Chief J T Prewit said the blaze began on a bed in a small bedroom and gutted the room while heavy smoke hampered crews. The fire was extinguished in about 30 minutes.
J T Moore Jr chairman of the chamber’s Agriculture Committee announced a meeting at 1 15 p m Thursday in the Chamber of Commerce Board Room to plan the 1973 Trans Pecos Agriculture Conference. Representatives from the Agriculture Experiment Station Texas A M Extension Service and the Pecos Chamber of Commerce will collaborate on an educational program for farmer rancher attendees.
Apollo 17 astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt landed Challenger in Taurus-Littrow for a three day lunar exploration mission. Evans remains aboard America as orbiter and supports from above while Cernan and Schmitt plan more than twenty miles of traversal and rock collection.
The Pecos Volunteer Fire Department urges holiday safety with tips on fresh and artificial trees lights and arrangements. They stress UL labeled gear and safe handling of matches lighters and decorations and offer help from city fire officials to set up an escape plan.
West of the Pecos Museum drew heavier weekend traffic with special Odessa Permian Basin area tours under Promote the Permian Basin Museums. Frank Hildebrand of the Texas Tourism Development Agency led Saturday morning tours as local officials and groups welcomed visitors including John Ben Shepherd and Mrs. Duncan. A Sunday Monahans bus visit followed, while locals and Rotary members joined open house attendees. Fruitcake sales for Christmas delivery were announced at Pecos High School with a December 15 call-in contact.
Paris AP reports Henry A. Kis singer and Hanoi’s Le Duc Tho met for the 13th time in three weeks today amid talks that could signal a turning point in secret negotiations for a Vietnam peace settlement.
The Enterprise will publish a special Christmas edition on Friday December 22 containing letters to Santa. Letters must be received by Monday December 18. Teachers are urged to use letter writing as a class project and letters may be grouped by school class.
DPS advised motorists to avoid travel except for emergencies across central Texas as icy conditions caused about 100 accidents since last night. A 20 car pileup blocked I 35 near Round Rock and a dozen more incidents occurred on Texas 195 near Georgetown with no fatalities reported. Many drivers stalled on Farm 620 near Lake Travis and sought shelter in homes while weather officials warned that ice would melt before resuming travel.
