Slim plans not to run the Pecos genteles on the ground but has chartered three helicopters and five airplanes to drop in photographers at strategic points. TV networks and film studios bid for the film, possibly a 30 minute documentary, but he insists on solid ground where his tables are.
At SPACE CENTER Houston NASA reported Apollo 17 crew led by Eugene A. Cernan executed a two second rock et firing to place them precisely on target for lunar orbit. Mission Control said the command ship America operates in a superior fashion as the crew continues maneuvers.
Ronald E Evans and Harrison H Schmitt fired their command ship to avoid a collision with the moon after Apollo 17 launched 2 hours 40 minutes late. The burn aimed a higher thrust path, increasing speed to 2 766 mph before gravity slowed it toward lunar orbit.
Pecos High School students delivered a professional performance of the courtroom drama The Night of January Sixteenth in the auditorium. A second show is set for 8 p m today with a new jury chosen from the audience to decide the defendant Karen Andre’s guilt or innocence.
A new cold front blasted into Texas dropping Amarillo’s temperature 12 degrees in an hour at 4 42 am. by Saturday morning the state faced scattered snow and wintry drizzle with icy bridges in Wichita Falls and fog along the upper Gulf Coast. Forecasters warned of freezing drizzle and snow through Saturday as the front moved southeast toward the Coastal Plains.
Bobby Bell says an anonymous donor started a fund for Jim Gunn’s medical expenses after a feed mill accident on November 26. Gunn, who has both feet lost, will be hospitalized at Medical Center in Odessa for about two months, in a private room and out of ICU, while he receives support and well wishes.
Claude W. Brown of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce announced a two day open house by 22 Permian Basin museums in 18 towns including Pecos. The event runs Saturday and Sunday with free tours led by Woody Ivy and local museum staffs.
Judge W O Pigman reports total corporation court fines amounting to 1364 dollars in November. Drunk in car fines 180 dollars and other drunk penalties 329 dollars. Traffic offenses dominate the total with careless driving 17.50, failure to grant right of way 70, no driver's license 252.50, and speed related fines among many items.
SWIG reports 5,094 gins this week bringing the year to date total to 50,423. Regional breakdown lists Reeves Upland 36,395 Pecos County Upland 5,995 Presidio Upland 1,575 and Pima 6,494. Last year at this time stood at 46,944.
An Ethiopian jetliner bound for Asmara was seized after takeoff from Addis Ababa. Seven hijackers and a woman leader were killed in a gun battle with security guards. An American passenger, Prof. Roderick Hilsinger, helped avert a grenade attack and was lightly wounded. Ninety four aboard. Authorities suspect Eritrean separatists. The plane landed safely in Addis Ababa.
The November 10 report shows 27 913 visitors, breaking the prior November 1971 monthly high by 907. Park Superintendent Donald Dayton notes this is the ninth monthly record of 1972, with January and August the only months below previous marks.
The Pecos Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors will meet on Tuesday at noon at Ben's Spanish Inn. President Mike Burkholder notes several important items on the agenda and urges all directors to be present.
Eddie Vasquez a South Pecos Sixth grader called Boatright after the Enterprise report to say Boots has a new home and lots of playmates. Mrs Boatright notes the public response and a preschooler asks if Boots is safe. Sixth graders who claimed Boots as mascot bought a collar leash treats and squeaky toys.
The report compares November conditions with 1971 and 1972 readings. It notes warmer days early in 1971 but overall cooler than the prior year, with highs near 88 and a first killing frost on November 19. Lows ranged from 27 to 48, and precipitation totaled 0.15 inches in 1972, with only a trace in 1971.
President Harry S. Truman remains on the critical list at Research Hospital and Medical Center as doctors report his heart is irritable and stressed. Dr. Wallace Graham said the 88 year old’s condition is not as good as hoped though some areas improve, with no other clear progress. He was brought to the hospital from Independence Missouri after lung congestion and a weakened heart.
Time Inc announced Life magazine will discontinue after the December 29 issue. The 36 year old weekly, famed for photo use, ends due to continuing losses with deficits in 1969 70 and smaller losses in 1971 72. Henry Luce founded the publication.
City police investigated 45 offenses in November, clearing 25 and recovering 458.50 in cash or 1 029 in property loss. Offenses against persons totaled three, while property crimes reached 31 including burglary thefts and shoplifting.
