McGovern backs teachers on right to strike in AFT session

Senator George McGovern urged the American Federation of Teachers to endorse him and provide a $250,000 campaign contribution. He asserted teachers should have the right to strike to improve education, while noting laws in many states ban strikes and impose jail terms. He spoke at the AFT convention in Minneapolis after arriving from Chicago. The scene contrasted with cooler reactions from the American Legion and Jewish leaders over his Israel stance, though Daley pledged strong support for McGovern in Illinois.
