The Pecos hosting of the West Texas Press Association annual convention drew widespread praise from delegates and readers. The article credits Pecos hospitality and a long list of local organizers, chambers, officials, and businesses for a successful event including meals, tours, entertainment, and registration support.
The Pecos Independent School District including Pecos Saragosa Patrose and Orla saw total valuations estimated at 4 545 720 after a board of equalization hearing. Increases were small with about a score protesting the raises. Individual valuations were Pecos 3 252 493 Saragosa 645 741 Orla 330 858 Patrose 315 628. The tax rate was set at 1 for ss and 65c on the 100 value for Saragosa Orla and Patrose.
The Menard News was awarded the Press Cup for the best weekly newspaper in West Texas at the West Texas Press Association convention in Pecos. The honor is awarded annually by the Abilene Reporter-News and the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. Pecos Enterprise could not compete this year, while Scurry County Times and Archer City News received honorable mention. The Childress News won the Southwestern Paper Co. plaque for best job printing. Osceo Times received movable mention.
U S Geological Survey sets up permanent Pecos offices in the Patterson Building and over the First National Bank to run a half million dollar Pecos river Joint Investigation. Five engineers expected to stay through two years with a possible peak of 12 on site. other federal agencies will join later. The program focuses on water quality, surface and ground water, salinity, flood control, erosion, sedimentation, and inter‑state water division between Texas and New Mexico.
City Council approves a 10 cent local tax hike on the $1.25 rate per $100 valuation to fund general operations and bond service. General fund totals top $25,274 with $10,420 for bond service. 83c levy planned on a $2,777,977 valuation after delinquent tax allowances.
The Pecos Lions Club aims to regain the attendance banner at the Wink meeting next Tuesday night. Twenty nine members pledged to attend this week's luncheon. A committee was named to maximize attendance. The meeting begins with a barbecue at 7 30 initiating the replaced Wednesday luncheon.
Paul Floyd, a local druggist, has been named scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop No. 67 sponsored by the Lions Club. He attended his first meeting with the troop in the new Scout Hut Wednesday night.
Vice President John N Garner, described as that poker playing whiskey drinking evil old man, was unanimously elected to honorary lifetime membership in the West Texas Press Association at their convention. The luncheon was hosted by the Pecos Chamber of Commerce at noon Friday. Garner formerly edited the Uvalde Leader.
A tentative 62 638 50 budget for the 1939 40 school year will be discussed and adopted or rejected at a public hearing on Sept 6. The plan bases state per capita apportionment at 22 for a total of 30 994 and local tax revenue at 77 percent amounting to 31 644 50. Expenditures include 238 266 instructional service 10 897 50 debt service 5 111 operation of plant 1 000 maintenance of plant 4 465 general control 1 300 auxiliary agencies 690 fixed charges 900 capital outlay. Current expenses total 50 841 versus 42 356 18 in 1938. Major rise is in instructional service from 31 748 21 to 38 266 to cover faculties at Patrole Saragosa and possibly Orla.
Supervisor Fred Wilbanks noted the September 7 deadline for farm tenant loan applications. Applications are filed at the local FSA office in the courthouse. Loans amortize over 40 years at 3 percent interest.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dinghee of Pecos welcome a son born in a local hospital Saturday. Both mother and child are reported in good health.
Sam A. Roberts of Haskell elected president succeeding Douglas Meador of Matador. Cedric Harrison Seymour and George Baker Fort Stockton named first and second vice presidents. J C Smyth Snyder named secretary. J M Rankin Slaton elected director. Colorado City chosen next convention site. About 150 Pecos attendees. 100 joined New Mexico Press Association in Carlsbad Caverns. Delegates toured Balmorhea and Big Bend area. welcome by W M Turner and Hudson. Meador praised community newspaper role.
Funeral services were held in Balmorhea Friday for Chas M Linton 67 who died at his home there Thursday He had lived in Balmorhea for a quarter century He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Fifty four delegates attending the West Texas Press Association annual meeting toured the Big Bend region. They dined at San Solomon Springs in Balmorhea, visited McDonald Observatory in Alpine, stayed at the Big Bend CCC camp, explored Chisos mountains, and ended with a Fort Stockton barbecue hosted by Lions Club and Fort Stockton Pioneer.
R T B Pruett 72 longtime Pecos resident died at home last Thursday after a prolonged illness. Born Mamie Elizabeth Tayloe in Fayette County she moved to Pecos in 1895 and married T B Pruett in 1899. She was active in the Methodist church and civic life, survived by two children six stepchildren two brothers and one sister with services held Saturday at the Pruett home.
Two resignations in Pecos school faculty were received this week by Supt. R. Henry Blackwell. Miss Millie Shafer, home economics teacher for five years, resigns to take a higher paying post at Kermit. Miss Jane Guinn, grammar school English teacher, also resigns with uncertain plans. The losses create vacancies in grade, junior high and senior high. The board will hire to fill the junior high vacancy caused by the death of Mrs. Lillie W. Cole.
M. M. Ferguson of Pecos, author of mathematics texts, lectured at a Lions Club luncheon about simplified methods he spent years developing. He demonstrated on the blackboard how his approach applies to every branch of mathematics and aims to a text usable from grade schools to colleges.
The Pecos Chamber of Commerce this week named an On-to-Marfa committee to organize Pecos participation in the Highland Fair at Marfa scheduled for October 5 through 7.
Canada ships six crates of Pecos cantaloupes to Montreal marking first foreign market reach this season. Tri State Produce leads with 12 carloads while M L Todd ships five more to reach 10. Local growers report late crops and upcoming shipments as rail agent H M E Jones fulfills a six crate order to Canada.
Mr and Mrs John E Adolf Skyiepal of Pecos welcomed a boy born Saturday at a Pecos sanitarium. The infant was named John Robert Adolf.
Mr and Mrs E S Derridge who farm about nine miles north of Pecos in Ward county are the parents of a boy born on Wednesday.
The All Gas Demonstration Home on Ross Boulevard in Sunset Heights will open next Friday evening with a grand program. Pecos High School Band directed by Wesley May performs from 8 to 9 p m. The house will be open for inspection Friday evening and Saturday and Monday. Sponsoring firms are Nagel Lumber Co Southern Union Utilities Co and Lewis Air Conditioning Equipment Co. Built under FHA with a 90 percent loan it has summer air conditioning and natural gas heating and appliances. Details appear in next week’s Enterprise.
The Soil Conservation Service will place three recording gauges and five standard gauges across the Toyah Creek Watershed. Locations include H. K. Kouitz ranch, Wynn Hamilton’s Sara gosa Texas, Mc Donald Observatory, and ranches of Mrs. J. L. Moore W. E. Moore W. W. Childress Popham Sam Pruett plus Balmorhea office. Ranchers cooperate to report rainfall after each event.
Bill Collie owner of Collie Electric Shop was made a member at a recent Pecos Rotary Club luncheon. He is the son of Postmaster M. W. Collie, who also belongs to Rotary.
