A postmaster recounts a stranger asking directions to the postoffice and notes a new large black and white sign to be hung in front of the building. He mentions signs and new pen points by staff as part of the so called new deal in the postoffice to help visitors locate the mail facility.
The Pecos region reports thousands of loan applications piling up at the regional administrator office while only a limited public works funding remains available. Time is a precious factor in securing approval and avoiding project delays.
Four Pecos fishermen Charles Fitzgerald Sr and Jr Mack Little Noah Huggins visited Don Martin Lake area in Coahuila Old Mexico and returned with glowing reports of the scenery rich fishing and hunting resources and the friendliness of locals.
Charles Fitzgerald Jr describes crossing into Mexico during a mission from Pecos and finds friendlier treatment there. The piece highlights Don Martin Lake, a vast reservoir on the Sabinas river built by the Mexican government, its mile wide dam, surrounding Sierra Madre, and a tropical Sabinas Valley with tall pecan trees and banana plants thriving along irrigated land.
A Pecos group praised local hospitality as residents sang folk songs at night by a campfire. They described excellent fishing with bass and massive catfish, and equally good hunting according to residents' reports.
The total cost of the trip proved economical with no excess beyond similar journeys in the IS country. Food, passport fees, fishing licenses, cadre fees, transportation, and other expenses matched those expected for a comparable distance and duration.
The Pecos Garden club will meet Monday August 28 with Mrs R Irwin. The gathering starts at 8 o clock in the morning and members are urged to attend.
Reeves county commissioners set August 26 for a local option election to decide 3.2 beer sales with dry or wet precinct outcomes. Voters will also choose delegates to a state convention, approve or reject amendments on beer, homestead tax relief, bonds, and Home Rule charters, plus select a State Representative for the 58th District. Voting strength this year runs about 40 percent of last year's poll totals.
Delegates report early favorable action with Red Bluff reviewed by the Public Works Advisory Board ahead of schedule. Senator Regan Vernon Sullivan and other Texas officials press for quick action, noting contracts expire August 25 and FCC and Public Works findings supported loan terms. Dudley Yard notes Red Bluff tops Texas list with a 7 to 5 approval chance in Dallas.
Betty Jean Sumpter arrived August 11 to the home of Mr and Mrs Deward Sumpter of Pecos. The infant and mother are reported doing splendidly. Many friends extend congratulations.
Nat Gunter and County Commissioner Henry Jones promote Balmorhea Labor Day events including a rodeo with calf roping breakaway cow milking and goat roping and a big Monday barbecue. Activities run Sunday September 3 and Monday September 4 with swimming fishing and baseball and entry fees from 1.50 to 2.50 per event. For more information contact Gunter or Jones.
The Pecos Chapter No. 81 O E S invites members to an 8:00 pm special meeting in the Masonic Temple Pecos. Mrs Riva Burnett Worthy Grand Matron of Texas will visit, joint with Barstow Chapter No 82. Secretary Duffie B Parker urges cooperation and attendance for a social hour after.
Business visitor Bud Stratton traveled to Pecos last Saturday for meetings. He interacted with local firms and inspected potential opportunities in the Pecos area.
Representative R. E. Thomason of El Paso telegraphed Judge J. W. Starley that he would fly to Washington Monday to aid the Red Bluff loan application. He said he is encouraged by progress and will provide all assistance, returning at his own expense during vacation.
Horace S. Homer former vice president of the Pecos Cantaloupe Association departs by rail Saturday for New York to pursue profitable marketing of Pecos grown cantaloupes. He lived in New York before moving to Pecos in 1929 to run Hotel Brandon.
Mr and Mrs Ben C Nobles announce the birth of a son named Billy Frank born last Friday at the Camp and Catlep sanitarium The infant is said to be healthy And the baby s uncle is E B Scrimshire a dry goods merchant Both mother and child are reported doing splendidly
A Pecos rally urged voters to approve a $20 million state relief bond, stressing it would not raise property taxes. Ray Lewis of the Chamber of Commerce led the meeting, noting charity work in Pecos. Ben Randall quoted federal aid fears and warned that without the bond, one million Texans rely on federal funds and may face starvation.
Pictures of Barstow vineyards fields and orchards from earlier days showing fruit crops beyond cotton or alfalfa were sent to Washington by Red Bluff proponents. Senator Regan requested material on non cotton crops and a bundle of images including pears almonds peaches spinach and related scenes was forwarded to him.
A big husky boy arrived last week at the Dallas home of Mr. and Mrs. John Thomas formerly of Pecos. Rumors say the boy may grow into an oil magnate. Local friends offer congratulations through grandparents Dr and Mrs O J Bryan.
Governor Miriam Ferguson hails Pecos cantaloupes as great after receiving a crate from Brooks and Todd farm via Bill Oden. Judge Ben Randall discussed the fruit in Austin, noting the governor and home folks share the same favorable taste.
Representatives of the Home Loan Corporation named in Pecos include Henry Russell as attorney and Earl Zell in a senior appraisal role. Reeves County activities center on the government agency created to help distressed homeowners facing foreclosure with refinancing options supported by a $200 million appropriation and bonding authority up to $2 billion. Applications begin with Russell in the Bozeman building, though filing guidance is limited.
Jim Bradford a sub foreman on the L W Anderson ranch in Ward County died Wednesday night in an El Paso hospital after surgery and a pneumonia complication. Funeral arrangements were not complete at press time.
The Pecos schools will begin on Wednesday September 6 after teachers institute on September 4 and 5. A large enrollment is expected as the new term opens this week.
Patricia Sue is welcomed by Mr and Mrs Webb Armstrong on August 5 at Pecos Sanitarium. The newborn girl is named Patricia Sue and both mother and child are reported well. The father and grandfather are also recovering.

J. F. Caroline of San Antonio, formerly of Pecos, visited Pecos on vacation from federal court work. He met old friends and, in conversation with T. H. Beauchamp, recalled that in 1907 he and Beauchamp opened the First National Bank, about twenty six years ago.
Mr and Mrs R V Norman of Amarillo visited this week recalling Pecos years ago when Norman served as school superintendent noted as one of the most popular men to hold the Pecos office.
Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Pope and Mr. and Mrs. John Wadley plan a 12 day Chevrolet tour totaling about 4000 miles. They depart for San Diego and will travel to Los Angeles Salt Lake City Grand Canyon Denver Santa Fe before returning home.
Misses Orvalen and Addie Mare Wilbanks returned from an eventful trip. They bought a brand new Chevrolet and toured the World's Fair, Washington, Philadelphia, Atlantic City, Canada, and New York. A boat trip to Panama from New York concluded the journey before returning home via the Old South.
Mr and Mrs L J Woods and sons Lewis and Everett return from a 16 day trip in northern New Mexico near Taos where they camped by a mountain stream enjoyed outdoors and trout fishing They claim to average 40 rainbow trout daily and offer to share directions for one dollar each with Mr Woods noted as trustworthy Also with them were Mr and Mrs Alfred Patterson and Jimmy of Santa Fe The line forms on the right gentlemen.
Mrs. Ira R. Titus recounts being waterbound for two days during a 4 inch deluge while returning with children Mary Elizabeth Frances Helen and twins from a month visiting relatives in Shelby county East Texas. Mr. Titus joined them in Mena Arkansas to visit relatives and attend a large family gathering.
Donald G. Casterlin returns from a summer session at Texas Technological College in Lubbock. He rejoined his duties afterward.
