A reporter toured the Fort Davis area camp housing about 400 young men. The site features tents, water tanks, decorated officers’ tents, and built roads. Despite a easy schedule and $30 monthly pay with free medical care, desertions rise as boys seek other options.
The text describes deserters being allowed ten days without penalty while their times are blacklisted making them ineligible for government positions. It notes rejoining is forbidden and questions repentance. It mentions gala paydays, rampant crap games, and semi military discipline without drills among the boys.
Engineer Vernon L Sullivan of El Paso rushes to Washington at Senator Ken Regan’s request to push the Red Bluff loan application. Regan’s telegrams report rapid progress and a private hearing before Deputy Administrator Waite Findlay. A Fort Worth delegation may seek state board and Administrator Jones approval to advance the case.
A Pecos survey of Blue Eagle adopters from the Chamber of Commerce shows NRA code compliance increasing payrolls and hours. Firms listed include Williams-Kerr Chevrolet Co, Pecos Furniture Co, Central Barber Shop, Ray Lewis Grocery, Silk Dry Goods Co, Leader Grocery Co, Wadley Cleaners, J C Penney Co, and Southern Union Gas Co with new hires and wage boosts.
H. P. Davis of the local Chamber spoke to a large Brandon meeting about the National Recovery Administration Blanket Code. He quoted NRA explanations on wage adjustments and the Blue Eagle insignia, noting time for compliance and limits on covered employment such as government officials.
The Red Bluff Water Power Control district elected R N Couch Reeves County No 2 as president with J H Miller Barstow as vice president E B Barron Pecos County No 2 as secretary and no treasurer chosen. The board extended the district boundaries to include seven smaller districts and accepted D W Bozeman’s offer to provide office space.
Work progresses on a scenic drive from the state cense road to a ridge above Fort MinS, climbing to about 5600 feet and offering canyon trails. Eight vacationer cottages, two mountain dams, picnic benches, and wading pools are planned, with the route about 20 miles from Fort Davis. The project dazzles with beauty, though some doubt value for money.
A total of 131 Pecos concerns have signed the National Recovery Administration Blanket Code and display the Blue Eagle badge. Signers include Crowe's Service Station J M Owen fruit and vegetable service C H Ferrell Filling Station and Grocery Pecos Auto Home and more.
Prices for flour jumped in Pe rcek as an August processing tax added about 69 cents to a 98 pound sack, affecting groceries and milling costs.
Reeves County will gain a new bridge on the Bankhead highway near the Davis Mountain filling station using part of Texas's share of a 24 million federal emergency construction fund. The project costs about 35 thousand dollars with 10 thousand state funds. the plan aims to provide local jobs through hand labor.
Mr and Mrs Barney Hubbs take their son on a Pontiac trip toward Mule Creek New Mexico visiting Paso and Hillsboro en route. Barney plans to rope bulls at Mule Creek while Mrs Hubbs rests in the cool woods along the section.
Reeves county committee of the Texas Liberal Legion plans a Friday night meeting to map the local campaign for beer legalization in Texas. Earl Bell chairs the group under A. H. Culwell. A tight race is expected with sentiment roughly split, and the county commissioners court will set a local option election for Reeves county at its next Monday meeting after a recent petition.
The Pecos Fire Department will convert the present Chemical fire truck into a booster tank and pump truck. The 300 gallon pressure tank and pump replace the chemical tank at an estimated cost of about $150. Roy Ware and George Jester will handle the conversion work. The council also approved extra hose for the firefighters.
Mrs J A Montgomery the mother of Mrs H C Glover is visiting here from Georgetown. Mr Glover drove down to pick them up and bring them back.
The council discussed securing a loan not to exceed 11000 from the Public Works Administration to build a new city hall after buying the present site for a federal building. Funds from the sale will retire funded debt, and a government loan at four percent may be sought. A possible 29 percent labor discount and plans for fire department and offices are outlined. A soft water committee led by Judge J Starley, Mo Taylor, and Alderman Ben T Biggs is to report.
County Judge J. B. Woolfolk announced the annual budget hearing will be held August 23. Taxpayers may appear before the commissioners court to review the budget and offer suggestions on county expenditures for the coming year as the board works on the budget.
Burglars entered the Pecos City Studio Monday night and made off with about $25 in cash and $15 in checks. Officials are checking up on the robbery. No valuable apparatus was damaged.
A rally is scheduled for next Tuesday night on the courthouse lawn to support the 20 000 000 relief bond issue to be voted August 26. Speakers will discuss the bond’s vital need for Texas. Judge Ben Randall led Reeves County Relief and Welfare Committee to Austin for a gubernatorial campaign conference.
Donley Broughton, longtime Pecos resident and husband of Katherine Dean, died last Saturday in Tyler after a short illness. Funeral services were held in Tyler on Monday, and his wife had been visiting Pecos when he fell ill. The Deans left at once for the funeral, and Broughton had lived in Pecos about five years while working as a scout for the California Company.
Boy Ware city inspector completed August dairy inspections serving Pecos. Of nine dairies visited only one failed to earn an A grade. A grades were awarded to Bryan Dairy Dardin Dairy Elkins Dairy Farnum Dairy Higgins Dairy Bob Lewis Dairy Payne Dairy and Roberson Dairy. Ware said monthly inspections will continue and grades published regularly.
Pecos residents and nearby counties raised about 2000 to support Red Bluff Dam with donations totaling 625 from Pecos, 275 from Barstow, and 600 from Pecos County. Local committee chaired by D W Bozeman and others notes money will be repaid if the project proceeds and appeals for further gifts to Washington continue.
At press time no one had cast an absentee ballot with the county clerk for the August 26 election. Ballots for the cheer election repeal and constitutional amendment voting have been received. Special ballots for the local option and representative elections must be printed.
