Pecos prepares to welcome editors writers and publishers from across Texas for the thirteenth West Texas Press Association meeting. Delegates will tour local cantaloupe country and Big Bend areas while locals highlight Pecos facilities and attractions.
Anticipation grows for the thirteenth annual West Texas Press Association convention in Pecos with over fifty reservas confirmed. Prominent editors and chamber officials from Balmorhea Alpine Marfa Fort Stockton and other Texas communities will join speakers Douglas Meador Sam Roberts Max Bentley Wilbur Keith S Deane Wasson Paul C Frank Jr A A Hopkins and others for a program including Carlsbad New Mexico Caverns Big Bend tours and a Big Bend CCC camp visit.
Former Pecos pupils plan a memorial fund for Mrs. Lillie Cole who taught there 27 years. Miss Warren Collings is treasurer with contributions welcome from ex-pupils and others, to be used for a suitable permanent tribute once contact with as many students as possible is made.
Detailed surveys have been completed and planning is underway for farms in Balmorhea Texas. E H Humphries Albert Moore Tatum Moore Carlos Payne and Mrs George Berkstres Farms are coordinating with Zech C Cameron project conservationist to provide technical assistance. A rotation system will improve soil build and crop yields and water distribution via rearranged borders and lateral ditches. Farmers should request Water Facilities services at the local office or contact staff to begin on their farm or ranch.
Mr and Mrs Gus E Bowles announce the birth of a son named Gusene born last Saturday in Pecos Hospital Mother and baby are reported to be doing well.
Drilling restarted Wednesday afternoon in Reeves County on the Forrest Development Corp No. 1 I. E. Scott wildcat. Eight and a quarter inch casing was cemented and drilling resumed at 3752 feet. The test seeks 4350 feet unless early production occurs. nearby Argo Oil Co plans a concurrent test around September 1.
The Pecos City Council meets in a called session to name a permanent parks board. The new board will review recommendations from the temporary parks committee appointed by the Chamber of Commerce. The group has chosen a site and financing plan, with details to be announced after the board is formed.
Hundreds attend funeral at the Presbyterian Church for Mrs. Lillie W. Cole 55 Pecos school teacher who died after a home accident. Rev. John W. Byrd led tributes with three other ministers. Church packed and many stood outside. Grave services included last year’s seventh grade students.
Pecos selects Earl Bell R C Brewster and Harris Eastham as directors of the newly formed Permian Basin Oil Association. The first oil discovery celebration in the basin will be in Colorado City on Thursday August 24. Directors will elect officers for the permanent organization then. Each Permian Basin town was asked to name three representatives a business man an oil man and a land and lease man.
Zimmer Motor Co reports July was the best month for new car sales this year according to manager Norman Eisenwine. The strong month defied typical summer dullness and topped monthly figures already posted in 1950.
L. W. Anderson state AAA committeeman returned last weekend from Hot Springs South Carolina where he attended a conference of range leaders and officials to draft the 1940 AAA program. U S Department of Agriculture officials and delegates from other range states attended the meeting. Anderson was accompanied by his daughter Nell Betty. Mrs. Anderson and grandson Wallace spent the week in Colorado Springs Colorado.
County agent reports near completion of rechecking work on cotton farms in Reeves County. General and cotton crop averages have been reviewed across practically all farms in the county.
The Red Bluff district nears completion of a 44000 electrification project in Pecos Valley with August 15 as the finish date. Over 20 workers install transformers after delays, and district officials expect extensive pumping use to boost farm efficiency in dry years.
Pecos Lions Club president R Henry Blackwell spoke at a Wednesday luncheon about the Lions International convention in Pittsburgh. He noted 15 000 Lions attended the four day meeting including about 250 Texans who took honors. Membership rose by 16 000 and 41 000 worthwhile activities were completed in the year. Havana won the next convention. Blackwell and Mrs. Blackwell then toured New York World's Fair by car.
Pecos cantaloupes continue to dominate markets with hundreds of crates moved weekly by express freight and truck. Daily express shipments approach 300 crates, nine carloads shipped to date, and total melon stock nears 100000 melons with 200000 half servings ready for public. Some growers report 50 to 100 crates daily by truck while two shippers have yet to start.
Mrs. Ada Armenta Farmer died at her Pecos home after a long illness. She had lived here 12 years and was previously married to Hodges. later married S. N. Farmer on October 25, 1924. She leaves eight children and five stepchildren. A Methodist, she is buried in Fairview Cemetery after funeral at the Pecos Funeral Home conducted by Rev. W. M. Turner and Rev. A. C. Douglas.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. Penn became parents to a daughter named Eleanor Vivian on Sunday. The baby was born in a Pecos sanatorium.
The Bloys Camp Meeting Association marks its 50th anniversary with a August 15 start at Skillman Grove, seating 1000 in a remodeled tabernacle. Dr. George W. Truett will preach the opening sermon and give the anniversary address the next morning.
This week sets Tuesday September 5 as the opening date for Pecos and Patrole schools. Pecos begins with a July 30 enrollment plan and a 30 member faculty, with a class-registration shift for seniors August 30 juniors 31 and sophomores September 1. Principal L E Schneider will spend three days in student consultations and schedule planning. A school board meeting may be held to fill the vacancy from the death of Mrs Lillie W Cole. Patrole also reopens September 5 and Saragosa’s school runs a seven month term with Mexican students waiting until October before resuming classes.
Seventy students enrolled this week in Pecos summer band school as the preparatory step before the new school year. Director Wesley C. May noted the registration and hoped for more beginners to sustain the band. classes run 7 am to noon in percussion reeds and brasses with two evening rehearsals weekly. a free concert before opening is tentatively planned.
Pecos Lions received an invitation to attend the quarterly Lions clubs meeting at Wink on August 22. The previous gathering was held in Pecos.
National Resources Planning Board starts a five day inspection of the Pecos river valley survey area with about 40 officials from federal state and local agencies traveling from Las Vegas New Mexico through Carlsbad Fort Stockton and Pecos. The trip reviews work programs and coordinates agency efforts for a $510 000 project addressing river encroachment contamination and groundwater conditions.
Walter Phillips arrived in Pecos this week to arrange for the opening of Jones Dry Goods, Inc. The exact opening date is not announced but expected soon. Phillips will be manager, coming from San Saba where he worked in dry goods. Mrs Phillips and their son are with him. The store sits at 217 Oak St in the Bell Building, formerly Silk Dry Goods Co.
