Voters overwhelmingly approved a 1.1 million bond sale and the sale of district land to finance Payson Unified School District’s new junior high school. Unofficial counts: bonds 439 to 79, land sale 457 to unspecified. The measure now awaits official canvass by Gila County Board.
Tonto National Forest Supervisor Bruce Hronek announced a four month project to inventory roadless and undeveloped areas for possible inclusion in the National Wilderness system. Public input reduced initial 977450 acres plus 400000 acres to 188350 acres in Gila County with further recommendations totaling 244090 acres in other counties.
The Old Payson Merchants Association sponsors a street dance at 7 p.m. Saturday in front of the Ox Bow Inn with The King Family and Len Roberts providing music. The Zane Grey Twirlers will give a 9 p.m. square dance demo. Police patrols restrict minor alcohol, and doors will check IDs. Admission is $1 for adults. children under 12 free with an adult.
Arizona's seventh annual Old-time Fiddlers' Contest and Festival will run September 24 and 25 at Rumsey Park drawing more than 6,000 fans. Contestants vie for 2000 in prizes with Russell Burris of Mesa defending his title.
Sixteen year old Danny Johnson, a Payson High sophomore new resident with his mother Dee and siblings Becky and Tim, will compete in the Old Time Fiddlers Contest. Self taught by ear since age five, he lists 46 learned tunes and plans to enter Trick and Fancy. His family, long active with Ozark Folk Center, has appeared on Today and Kid's World. He wears out boots practicing for the weekend event.
Payson Town Council reviews three sealed bids for a 6 000 square foot town hall project funded mainly by Federal Revenue Sharing. Advanced Building Systems of Phoenix bids $117 695, with Glen Jamison Construction at $125 990 and Ed Clayton Construction at $137 900. If awarded, construction starts within ten days and finishes in about four months, aiming for a February move.
