Arizona Department of Transportation authorizes about 25000 to install traffic signals at the 260 87 junction after a three year study. Design work by the DOT traffic design division. Bids expected in December with installation planned for February or March.

Payson residents are urged to support an Oct 3 blood drive at the Elks Lodge by Don Gibson. Hospital use reached 278 units through Aug 31 with only 88 pints donated. The drive runs noon to 7 pm with optional appointments. contact 474-2572 or 474-2110 for details.
The Town of Payson prepares to start construction on a new 6000 square foot town hall on 303 N Beeline. The current trailer offices will be relocated today and offices closed. construction funded by Federal Revenue Sharing totaling 117,695 dollars and land donated by Suburban Developers valued around 40 thousand. Groundbreaking expected but not set. project due for completion in February pending weather.
Lynn Sheppard chair of the Gila County Board says he applied for Federal Highway Commission funds to finance paving of Houston Mesa Road and two nearby routes near Payson. The grant would cover one mile of Houston Mesa Road, the Control Road, a Tonto Creek bridge in Tonto Basin, and part of a dirt road near Globe, with county matching funds and local bid involvement. If approved, construction could start soon with favorable October and November weather. further details await confirmation.
Three people were injured in a two-vehicle crash one mile east of the 260 and 87 junction. Florence Northrup, 62, and her son Patrick Rody, 26, both of Star Valley, were injured with Mrs Northrup in critical condition. Michael F. Clark of Glendale was slightly hurt and treated at Payson Hospital. Police said a Forest Service parking-lot vehicle pulled onto 260 and caused the collision with a Southwest Forest Industries tractor-trailer driven by Lloyd Rocher, 20, of Happy Jack. Northrup was ejected through the windshield. Rocher swerved and struck Clark broadside. The investigation continues as of Wednesday.
Payson reports a record August with 16 new homes and eight mobile homes added. Building permits brought in $2,263, the town’s highest monthly total since permit requirements began in 1974, surpassing July 1976’s $2,064. If growth continues, Payson could reach about 30,000 residents within 55 years.
