The Deere SawseRee event in Payson drew one of the best attended gatherings, with spectators from the western states and some from the eastern states traveling to attend.
Sol Rudnick of Phoenix retained his Arizona Champion Fiddler title at the fourth annual event at the Rodeo grounds. Local fiddlers Githon, Reid placed high, with junior champ Lucky Lee Blackwell from Mesa. The Payson Chamber spent over $1,000 in prizes as crowds enjoyed the festival and county fair atmosphere.
Dr Richard B Johns longtime Payson pediatrician with over 2000 patients closed his practice Monday and joined the U S Air Force as a civilian employee Wednesday He will serve the servicemen families at Williams Air Force Base east of Chandler He has served as Payson Hospital chief of staff and secretary of the medical staff and led local civic groups including the chamber of commerce Rotary and Longhorn Boosters He helped attract new doctors to the Payson area and is succeeded by Dr Claudo Zamorano as Payson physician
Jed A. Barquist 23 of Tempe died in an early morning collision when struck by a car transport truck driven by Robert D. Huddleston 41 of Polacca. The wreck damaged nine vehicles and took 15 hours for crews to clear a canyon site.
