Jail fire at Gila County causes $5000 damage

A stack of burning mattresses in the Gila County jail caused an estimated $5000 smoke damage. Clinton C. Eliason Jr., 26, of Payson, set the fire with matches and faced charges of first degree arson. He was arraigned in Globe where he remains held on $1800 bond.

Payson Sanitary District surveys sewer use and growing needs

The Payson Sanitary District conducts a door to door survey led by Marybeth Lambregtse to assess current sewage use, problems, population growth, and future development. Superintendent Don Manthe says the system is at 75 percent capacity and could require a federal grant funded expansion by 1981 with no rate increase.

Payson Roundup Announces Thanksgiving Office Closure

The Payson Roundup will close on Thanksgiving Day to allow staff time with families. Offices reopen at 8 a.m. Friday and normal publication resumes next week with the next issue on December 1. The staff extends holiday wishes for a happy and safe Thanksgiving.

CAAG obtains bond to continue funding programs

The Central Arizona Association of Governments secured a $150,000 bond after prior coverage was canceled following mismanagement charges against former director Sidney Goodman. CAAG plans to continue administer ing federally funded programs under the CETA act with new executive director George Kruse and new accountant, amid renewed insurer approval by Hartford. Local governments in Gila and Pinal Counties may sign joint liability agreements protecting about $144,000 in CSA funds.

ADOT awards highway bids in Gila County

The State Transportation Board awarded two ADOT contracts in Gila County on November 18 in Phoenix. M. M. Sundt Construction of Tucson will upgrade 3.8 miles of High way 87, south of Payson, for 2.5 million dollars. Fisher Contracting of Phoenix won 1.1 million for a new Highway 188 alignment near Punkin Center, including grading surfacing and guard rails.
