Payson merchants face a Christmas finance challenge as residents shop Phoenix-area and Casa Grande outlets. Local sellers argue for spending locally while surveys in Casa Grande seek to uncover price, selection, and service drivers behind out-of-town shopping.
Smoke seen on the Rim during the Thanksgiving weekend originated from a controlled burn by the Coconino National Forest Service. Crews burned thinned slash old stumps and pitchy logs with flames six to eight inches high. The fire briefly crossed the Rim onto Tonto National Forest land burning about eight to nine acres before containment.
Fire officials warn that improper fireplace construction and wood stove piping could trigger more fires this winter. In Pine a Nov 20 blaze damaged a wall with $600 loss. 85 percent of Pine last year’s fires were fireplace related. Both towns offer inspections and distribute safety handouts to residents.
Rose DiStefano, 16, was located Monday by a DPS helicopter in the Mazatzal Wilderness near Sheeps Seep Springs after straying from her hiking party the previous day. She was in good health. rescuers credited DPS, Gila County Sheriff's Posse, and the Junior Posse with the successful find.
Payson Sanitary District warns property owners must obtain a public sewer hook up permit within weeks. Permits expire 90 days after issue and after Jan 1 1978 private septic systems will be deemed public nuisances. Public connection fee rises from 50 to 200 dollars.
The Payson PTA sponsors a panel discussion at Julia Randall Elementary School cafeteria at 7 30 p m on the role of sports in the curriculum. Panelists include Tom Meek athletic director Bill Lawson junior high coach and Sharkey Baker high school principal. Babysitting is available and refreshments will be served.
The First National Bank of St Paul Minnesota won the Payson Junior High School bond bid with 467354.17 dollars net interest cost and 4.9109 percent net rate. Eight firms bid. Superintendent Q O Thompson said construction bids open around January 19 with work starting late January.
