Deer Hunt Opens Across Arizona With Mixed Success
Game and Fish reports from regional offices show the 1976 deer hunt opener generally met expectations. In White Mountain, hunter success rises with several large bucks including a mule deer with a 33 inch spread, while north-central Arizona saw deer and hunters spread through units. Over 62,000 hunters were expected to start October 29, with prospects for an improved season. Deer harvest has gradually rebounded since the 1971 low when 67,786 hunters took 11,173 deer for a 16.5 percent success rate, following the shift to permit-only hunting.

Trout and bass fishing reports across regions
Reports say all streams were fair for trout with no data for Bear Canyon and Blue Ridge Lakes. Ashurst Lake in the north-central region posted good trout, while central waters showed Lake Pleasant with good largemouth bass and catfish, Roosevelt with only fair bass and poor other species. Jim Finley of Payson and Bob Kantin of Milwaukee, Wis., show a portion of their Obregon Mexico smallmouth bass catch after three days of fishing in a large man-made irrigation reservoir. Finley called conditions excellent with fish biting from morning to dark as Kantin noted using Cordell Big O lures.
