Smock and Taylor Secure Last Payson Town Council Seats
Darrow J. Smock and Don K. Taylor won the Payson Town Council seats in the general election Tuesday joining Bud Haack Dave Marko Jack Menschein Ellen Sutton and Willard Taylor seated after the April 17 primary. Taylor 342 Smock 317 Belk 313 Foster 295 with 664 voters of 1450 registered voting 45.8 percent. the new council takes office June 14 and will draw lots to assign two and four year terms under the staggered-term plan.

Payson Pine Young and Tonto Basin schools will award 169 diplomas this week. Old Time Gospel Music Festival Opens Bicentennial Series
The Payson area kicks off a Bicentennial music series with the second annual Old Time Gospel Music Festival at the Payson Rodeo grounds. Acts include Pilgrims Quartet and New Life Singers. emcees are Ralph White and Rev. Robert Donovan. Admission costs $1 for adults and 50 cents for children. festivities begin at noon Saturday and Sunday.

Visitors swarm Payson forest to escape heat
An influx of recreationists filled all regular campgrounds in the Payson area as the Payson Ranger District reported full capacity early Saturday. No man caused fires were reported, though one lightning start burned 3 acres near Pyle Ranch, northwest of Kohl's Ranch.
