Payson Considers Forming Its Own Police Department
Payson Town Council will discuss creating a municipal police force at 7 tonight at Town Hall as the 1977-78 budget begins. Officials say the move could cost about 120000 annually, with current county policing costs around 2912 per month and cars now used by the county to be returned if a town department is formed.

Payson Rodeo Queen crowned at Swiss Village Inn ceremony
Toki Furgason was chosen queen of Payson's 93rd annual rodeo with Jenna Spreen as attendant after a day of events judged on personality and poise. Miss Furgason received a $150 gift certificate and an engraved belt buckle, while Spreen earned a $100 gift certificate and belt buckle. Other contestants included Michelle Broadston, Christopher Creek, Kathy Carpenter, Star Valley, and Deanna White. The event was sponsored by the Payson Chamberettes with judges from Scottsdale and Laveen, and local merchants donated three gift packages to each contestant.

Mountain lion tracked and killed near Payson Ranchos
A mature male mountain lion, hunted for over a week, was shot Wednesday morning within half a mile of town after Richard Beeler and three Walker Hounds tracked it from Payson Ranchos. The Coopers reported their missing puppy and sign of the lion feeding on livestock.

Arizona tour visitors to stop in Payson Sunday
About 40 tour agents and visitor bureau managers from across the country will visit Payson after a two day central Arizona bus tour. They will arrive at the Payson Chamber of Commerce at about 1 30 and receive information packets before lunch, then return to Phoenix. Marguerite Noble will meet the bus at Woods Canyon Lake to provide a short commentary on local points of interest.
