Riders rescued after two day wilderness search near Payson

Scottsdale man Mike Dillon age 41 and his daughter Stephanie 15 were found safe late Monday after three days stranded in Mazatzal Wilderness ten miles west of Payson. A DPS helicopter landed them and ferried Stephanie to Payson while Dillon was flown out.

Brush Fire Ignites In Payson Land

A Winslow couple clearing a pine lot in east Payson started a forest fire when wind spread embers from two brush piles. The blaze burned about three quarters of an acre and required 17 firefighters to extinguish after three hours. They were cited for burning without a permit. Fire officials urged precautions and noted high fire danger this winter. Permits for open burning are available at the Payson fire station or Town Hall.
