United Utilities seeks interim 33 1/3 percent water rate rise
Arizona Corporation Commission hearing in Phoenix on May 16 recommended an interim 33 1/3 percent increase for United Utilities Water Company of Payson. The proposal would raise the basic charge from 7.25 to 9.66 for 2,000 gallons and from 1.00 to 1.33 per 1,000 gallons thereafter. A public hearing on permanence would follow within 90 days if approved.

Forest opens for personal fuelwood on Tonto Ranger district
The Tonto National Forest will be a free use area for down and dead wood from July 1 except in wilderness, with no permits required for personal fuelwood. Rules limit to only down wood, prohibit standing trees, require spark arrestor checks, cap free use at 10 cards per person, and restrict collection to dry roads and non campground areas.

Dedication planned for airport as construction nears end
Payson's airport is slated for dedication on July 25 as runways are paved and finish work continues. The project, funded by a 345,724 federal grant with state and county support, includes a 5,200 foot runway and multiple taxiways and aprons. Low valuation on UU United Utilities for Payson purchase
Payson Town Council heard that UU United Utilities is valued at about 420000 with debts totaling 1593381.09 and assets around 2013444.88. Engineer Dick Bartholomew calculated a present system value of 917921, leaving debts to exceed worth by 675460, with major secured creditor Harris Trust holding a 470327.19 claim on roughly 1.9 million in property.
