Jury acquits knife slayer after guilty verdict
Thomas A. Allen. 26. of Phoenix was acquitted by Judge D B Greer on June 5 after a jury found him guilty of voluntary manslaughter and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon in the Gay Nineties Bar case. William Price, 26, of Payson died. two others were injured. County attorney Ed Dawson called the action unusual and noted acquittal may be directed when evidence is lacking before trial.

Two Wounded In Phoenix Shooting Involving Payson Men
Payson residents John Robinette and Steven Guy Treat were shot near Bethany Home Road on the Black Canyon Freeway when a two person pickup attempted to run them off. Robinette is in fair condition at Maricopa County Hospital. John Sells escaped injury. Police have not identified suspects or motive as of Tuesday.

Janie Banbury Named Rodeo Queen for RCA Event
Janie Banbury was chosen Rodeo Queen to reign over the RCA Rodeo August 22 to 24. She was selected from six contestants based on riding, personality and poise, with judges Cliff Woods and Stella Henry. Banbury, a Brigham Young University sophomore, plans a career working with handicapped children. Attendants Jamie Wagner and Louise Hunt, both Payson High School students, received $50 and $25 gift certificates respectively. others were Michele Butler Tammy Pyle and Mary Walker. Charlene Hunt led the contest. The event is sponsored by the Payson Chamber of Commerce and Payson Chamberettes.

Prisoners held in the Payson jail for four weeks were returned to Globe on June 4 under Sheriff Lyman Peace. He cited unsafe conditions and a federal emergency grant of 600 dollars monthly that funded extra staff, while Board of Supervisors refused social security and insurance. Repairs completed. budget tensions with supervisors over jail staffing and cost controls persist.

Vandalism and accidents taxed Payson sheriff last week
Payson sheriff investigated five vandalism reports, two non fatal crashes, and an accidental gunshot wound. Incidents included a broken soft drink machine at Payson Laundry Center, a shattered window at Payson Country Club, vandalized equipment at Asphalt Equipment in Albuquerque, and a car window break near the Saw Shop. Two minor car crashes occurred on Old Pine Road and Houston Mesa Road with no injuries. An attempted break in at Rim Trail Estates was reported, and a firearm accident left John T. Elliot with a gunshot wound to his hand.

Forest fire restrictions imposed on Tonto and Prescott areas
Campfire and smoking restrictions went into effect Saturday at 6 a.m. due to winds and low humidity. The rules ban smoking except on surfaced roads or in designated areas, as fire conditions rise to very high or extreme in parts of the Tonto and Prescott National Forests.

Old-time Country Music Festival Opens in Payson
Payson hosts the second annual Old-time Country Music Festival at the Rodeo grounds starting Saturday at 10 a.m. through Sunday noon with $1,040 in prize money. Judging focuses on talent showmanship and categories include bluegrass fiddle and banjo with emeritus emcee Russell Burris. Admission is $2 adults $1 children per day or $3 adults $1.50 children for both days.
