Nearly 1,000 firefighters from three western states fought a week long blaze on Mt. Ord that consumed over 6,000 acres of chaparral and pines. The man caused fire began midweek and was contained by Sunday amid winds and steep terrain. no charges filed.
A weekend festival at the Payson Rodeo Grounds features toe tapping country music with contestants playing various instruments for a $1000 prize. Sponsored by the Payson Chamber of Commerce, admission is modest. Also planned is the Payson Historical Society's Pioneer Life and Antique Show at Payson High School gymnasium.
The Payson Planning and Zoning Commission plans to ask the Town Council to hire a special state real estate investigator to probe alleged land sale violations in the Payson area. The council meets at 8 p.m. Monday at Town Hall with an open workshop an hour earlier.
Gary Hardt, 33, a Payson woodcutter, was acquitted of assault on Deputy Jim Damme after a jury trial lacked, ruling simple assault may have occurred but Damme was not on duty. Sheriff Peace condemned the decision, while County Attorney Dawson vows to appeal on the law.
