Independence Day Family Fun Planned by Payson Humane Society

The Payson Humane Society hosts its third annual Independence Day Celebration on July 4 from 5:30 p.m. at the Hamman Lumber lot on Beeline Highway. Activities include games, a cake walk, a fish toss, street dancing with Jody Sixkiller and others, ballroom dancing exhibitions by local clubs, and appearances by local dignitaries and pageant winners. Booths for food and crafts are available for a $15 flat fee, with donations welcome for the humane society’s building fund.

Rumsey Park gets $181 147 federal grant for Payson

The Town of Payson receives a $181 147 grant from the U S Department of the Interior to fund Rumsey Park as a Bicentennial project. Rep John Conlan announced the award in Washington and a July 4 ground breaking is planned with Mayor Willard Taylor and local officials. A dedicatory ceremony will follow construction.

APS pickup recovered but wrecked

An Apache Junction youth was arrested June 20 for allegedly stealing a pickup truck from the Arizona Public Service yard at McLane and Aero. The 1972 Chevrolet pickup was totaled and found wrecked in a wash behind a residence. The youth was turned over to juvenile authorities in Pinal County.

Blood Drive July 8 at Payson North

Payson North hosts a blood drive on July 8 sponsored by the Payson Business and Professional Women's Club. Appointments are encouraged with Lou Landers or Jean Jones, though walk ins are welcome. Blood Services of Arizona seeks donor participation to replenish hospital supplies.

Trees Cause Outages in Payson From Winds and Trees

Arizona Public Service reported power outages across Payson on Monday and Tuesday caused by wind gusts and falling trees in the Payson Ranches area. A dead tree near Colcord and Overland toppled Tuesday morning, briefly cutting power to the northeast town and Star Valley. Cable TV was affected, with repairs underway and damages estimated at 600 to 700 dollars.

Beard Growing Contest Tied to Payson Rodeo

The Payson Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Beard Growing Contest in conjunction with the 92nd Payson Rodeo. Contestants must register Friday with Joyce Good to be eligible. Prizes honor longest, scraggiest, thickest, thinnest and most original facial hair. Rodeo runs August 27 to 29 with judging on the 28th.

Extinguisher Demonstration at East Verde Park Fire Dept

Demonstrations on how to use fire extinguishers properly will be given at 7 p.m. at the East Verde Park Fire Department on July 7. Jim Salem, a fire equipment sales representative, will demonstrate the use of pressurized water, dry chemical and carbon dioxide extinguishers and explain the proper applications of each. The public is invited to attend.
