Payson town leaders call a Friday 8 p.m. meeting in the County building to consider a mid-decade census. U S Bureau counts put population at 2,885, with potential $16 000 extra annual revenue if actual residents exceed 3,000. Costs for a ballot census estimated around $1,000 to $1,500.
The Weather Observer reports Payson reached 99 degrees on Tuesday the week's high while lows dipped to 50 on Thursday Saturday and Tuesday. A trace of rain appeared Saturday, while the census cost and need remain under review.
The Payson Sewerage Legal Fund Committee will meet at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Woman's Club building. It is urgent all members attend as important business is to be taken care of.
Dorinda Vick, director, announced that Head Start will start September 9 at 8 a.m. Four more enrollment vacancies are open and children may be registered prior to September 9 by calling 474-2738 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. weekdays.
Payson Hospital Auxiliary kicks off its fourth annual Mile of Dimes campaign this Friday through Sunday. Solicitors will collect money for a new hospital wing and furnishings. checks are welcome in advance of the weekend.
The Payson Fire District faces a funding crisis as a legal dispute pits Gila County against the Town of Payson over who must assume fire protection duties. The County Supervisors withheld a tax levy pending attorney general guidance, while the department carries a $30,000 county balance and awaits a $72,000 custom fire apparatus arriving soon.
A series of three crashes on the same curve near Strawberry last week left one dead and four injured, including Jacksonvill e residents Carol Taylor and Sheridan Grimm. Grimm, charged with felony vehicular manslaughter, drove a tractor trailer loaded with rail track and veered too fast, overturning. Taylor died, trapped under the engine. A helicopter assisted rescue, and Grimm faced preliminary hearings. Also involved were Michael Richards of Phoenix and two teenagers in separate incidents. investigations continued. Other minor injuries reported in Star Valley and Payson areas.
Payson schools report an enrolment increase of 49 students in the first two days of the new year compared with the same period last year. Kindergarten led gains with 66 registrations, grades one to six rose to 411, junior high to 153, while senior high stayed at 270.
