The Tonto Natural Bridge, 11 miles north of Payson on State Route 87, ranks as a premier tourist attraction in Northern Gila County. It draws thousands of visitors yearly to the Payson area as the world’s largest travertine bridge.
A thunderstorm drenched Payson with 1.14 inches of rain on Monday night, causing street flooding and hazardous conditions at intersections. Public Works reported $1,000 in street damage, most repaired by Wednesday, while lightning struck three homes and a mobile home, with minor damage and one attic fire controlled by residents and fire crews.
Preparations are underway for the August 27 28 Payson Rodeo the world’s oldest continuous rodeo RCA sanctioned with a large entry field and 11000 plus purse. Reigning all around champ Leo Camarillo from Oakdale California claimed last year’s honors earning over 670 dollars in two events.
More than 300 residents and group representatives gathered at Miami High School in Globe to oppose a Forest Service proposal to add half a million acres of Gila County land to the National Wilderness system. The Committee for Multiple Use of Public Lands, chaired by Tom Clary, aims to mobilize local leaders and chambers of commerce to block further wilderness designation. Lynn Sheppard, chair of the Board of Supervisors, announced a previously approved resolution denouncing the plan as a crackdown on residents access to recreation.
