The Payson Town Council filled the last street department positions by hiring Robert Lincoln and Brad Smith, both Payson residents, to work with Street Superintendent Larry Wilbanks. The council plans to rent equipment and has county support on roads until the department is fully operational.
A skeleton Fire Service crew battled seven lightning caused fires in the Payson District last week. The largest blaze reached the base of Strawberry Mountain near Pine and was extinguished with help from Pine Fire Department and local residents. Remaining fires were small and contained, with rain aiding suppression. Fire control officer Dave Bacon urged residents to keep fire danger high and obtain permits for any brush burning from county authorities or the Forest Service.
A large haul of silver Indian style turquoise jewelry valued at about 30 thousand dollars was stolen from Wall’s Fargo Antique store on the Beeline Highway in Payson. The break in occurred in under ten minutes with a crowbar-like tool and no clues left behind.
Principal William Nelson announced the coming school year registration schedule. Seniors register August 19, juniors August 20, sophomores August 21, and freshmen August 23. Hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the high school office.
A two vehicle accident Thursday in Star Valley left four people with minor injuries. The Ehrhardt family of Tempe was taken to Payson Hospital after a truck driven by Myron L. Smith of Phoenix hit their car as they made a left turn. Smith’s truck overturned. DPS could not determine if Ehrhardt signaled. No citations issued.
A 40 mile section of State Route 260 between Overgaard and Show Low was dedicated by the State Transportation Board. Board Chairman Walter W. Surrett outlined a 13 year buildout totaling over 18 million and announced $7 million more in planned improvements in the 5 Year Highway Construction Program. The completed 40 foot roadway enhances local and through traffic and offers a shorter Phoenix to I-40 eastbound route via Payson and Show Low. The dedication was hosted by the Show Low Chamber of Commerce after the board’s regular meeting at the Show Low Municipal Building.
The Payson Sanitary Board will hold its next regular meeting at noon Thursday August 8 at the Payson Country Club.
