Open pit dumps to close on Tonto Forest by June 30
Tonto National Forest supervisor Fred Wirth announced the closure of all open pit dumps by June 30 to meet state and federal air and water standards. Counties will operate sanitary landfills in place of the pits, with sites in Tri City Scottsdale Tempe Mesa Globe Carefree and Star Valley Payson. Additional sites at Punkin Center Roosevelt and Young are reserved.

Easter services mark Good Friday and sunrise at Payson
Community worship marks Holy Week in Payson with a Good Friday service at 7 30 p m at the Assembly of God on Colcord Road featuring Rev Gilbert Lewis from First Baptist. Sponsoring churches include Community United Presbyterian Mount Cross Lutheran Church of the Nazarene First Baptist St Philip Roman Catholic and Assembly of God. A sunrise service at 6 a m will be held at the Payson Country Club, hosted by St Pauls Episcopal and Community United Presbyterian. A continental breakfast follows at the club. Senior Citizens join the Good Friday service instead of their usual Thursday gathering.

Morris Found Not Guilty In Payson DWI Case
Visiting Globe judge Don Haines found Bill Morris of Star Valley innocent in Payson court on March 29 after a February 1 DWI citation by the Department of Public Safety. Morris was in a one car crash near Christopher Creek with no injuries.

Gila County Zoning Hearings Set for April 24
Gila County Planning and Zoning Commission will meet April 24 at 2 p.m. in Pine to discuss zoning for 320 square miles from Payson North to the county line along the Mogollon Rim and east of Milk Ranch Point to the Mazatzal Wilderness. Proposed zones include R1 D175 for single family homes and mixed residential commercial districts for Pine and Strawberry. A rezoning for Ralph W. Sturges to allow a mobile home park near Cow Town Estates and a rezoning by O'Malley Development Co. for apartments by Payson Country Club will also be on the agenda.

Payson Arbor Day honors first mayor with dogwood dedication
A sparsely attended Arbor Day ceremony at the new Payson Chamber of Commerce building dedicated a red dogwood to Payson’s first mayor Ted Pellett. The event, led by Garden Club president Mrs Robert Troutman, drew 29 fourth graders from Julia Randall Elementary who performed tunes under Bill Ryhan. The tree will stay in Potter’s yard until the chamber is completed, then move to its permanent spot. Funeral services for Robert Lee Zeigler, 54, will be held today in Cincinnati Ohio.
