Memorial Day Observed by Payette Veterans and Citizens

Memorial Day rites in Payette closed town businesses from morning until five. G A R and W R C members led a cemetery decoration, parade to the grounds, and a program with Band selections, readings, Peters address, and a volley salute. The event honored living and dead veterans, with communal pride evident throughout.

Payette Valley Vinegar ships first batch of pickles

Payette Valley Vinegar Company announced its first pickle shipment this week from a newly equipped keel factory. Twenty five kegs were sent with orders pending. the firm plans to produce one thousand kegs as it expands its operations in Payette. A separate item reports Edward Johnson, son of Cal Johnson, injured by a horse at the Applegate shear plant, losing consciousness briefly but recovering with medical care.

Labor Shortage Weighs on Payette Valley Projects

In Payette and vicinity a serious labor shortage slows alfalfa cutting fruit thinning ditch work railroad extension and sewer system installation. Farmers and fruit growers seek workers while multiple projects press for labor as the week of the first alfalfa cut approaches. Busy Saturday draws shoppers to Payette streets

Payette saw a bustling Saturday with crowds in the afternoon and evening as shoppers flocked to local merchants advertised in Payette papers and The Royal Neighbors. Young Girl Killed In Auto Accident Near Spake River

A Cadillac driven by Burl Anderson of Rose with Dottie Butler and Maude Kidd of Ontario plunged into three feet of water at the Spake river wagon bridge. Butler died, Anderson and Kidd uninjured, passengers say speed was moderate but wreck suggests high gear. The car belonged to Anderson of Moise Valley Oregon. Butler and Kidd are aged about sixteen.

Boy Drowns in Weiser River in Bathing Accident

A Vancouver youth, Marty Metcalf, 17, visiting Wetter, drowned while swimming with two companions near the railroad bridge. He ventured into swift deep water, cried for help, and his friends fled to safety, unable to rescue him. He had recently arrived from Vancouver and had no known relatives in Wetter. Also notes the Fourth Annual Rose Festival in Portland with railroad ticket details for travel from Payette to Portland.

Memorial Day Observance By Grand Army and Corps

Veterans and Grand Army units urged citizens to display flags on homes and businesses to foster patriotism. The WRC convention was set for Lewiston Idaho July 28 29 and 30 with delegates named. A memorial day service featured cemetery tributes and a luncheon at Odd Fellows Hall for comrades and guests.

Surveyors at Work on Snake River Irrigation Project

Surveyors from Snake River Irrigation Company are laying out permanent ditch lines at Dead Ox Creek and plotting the site for a power house. Chief Engineer FM House says a car of materials for the power house arrives this week and site work starts immediately. Water power will pump Dead Ox Creek area, enabling irrigation and power generation. Bert McIntyre notes upcoming yard sales at A L Tuttle’s Pleasant View and R V 2 Hivery Burn Purtee events.
