A group of young men, mostly just past twenty one, depart for Camp Fremont amid hearty farewell. A benquet at the M. C G. A. Friday night precedes entrainment, with Claud Ensign chosen to lead the send off as cheers erupt at the depot.
A World War I letter from Len Bowers in France dated July 20 1918 describes a leg wound from a shrapnel hole and a belief he will be back at the front in a few weeks. He notes a hospital hotel in France and mentions not seeing Bill for two months while giving a brief view of action and registration notices from Idaho counties.
Mr and Mrs Philip Reiger returned to their home in North Dakota after several weeks with friends in Payette and an outing at Payette Lakes. They are glad to be home but hold Payette friends in warm regard. Mr and Mrs T J Brown and Margarie of Selah Washington are expected here around the 11th for a visit. Mr Brown is editor of the Yakutia Valley Optimist and plans the trip if he can secure help. They intend to travel by auto. J C Bowker and A J Pence bought another load of cattle on the Portland market this week. Twelve cars were purchased, Pence joined them to Omaha where the cattle will be sold.
Emil Hurburgh a German alien locemy who left Cleveland was arrested at Twin Falls about two months ago and jailed in Boise earlier placed on parole to work on the Rob Coulter ranch near Falk He refused to work and was brought to Payette by Sheriff Hanigan He is under instruction by Boise officers Orcutt Harland report bountiful hay crop 400 tons on the 160 acre lease on the Payette Oregon Slope Also notes a derrick accident injuring foreman Stagerwald and six horses running with the derrick no casualties
A Payette county call for student nurses lists a quota of five. Eight applications arrived and six more await the next call. Names include Harlene Satoris Ruth Short Freddie Jimmerson Marian Clark Mable Smith Fay Lauer Zola Pearce Pauline Anspiker and others from United States Post Office Advertised List 8-10-18. Mrs Nilla Makam Miss Gordie Perkins Mr M Beagle take notice. Melons for sale at Crystal Finch, phone 295-45. Mrs John McWilliams, long in Sand Hollow, staying with Nuree Shafer for medical treatment.

Mr Jas C Lewis reports from his Ohio Valley visit that Wheeling logged a 106 degree record on the 5th, drought harmed corn and pastures, hay excellent in quality though light. war dominates eastern and western concerns with steel mills running full tilt and people united in effort. The old National Pike now serves as a main war logistics route with motor truck trains carrying soldiers toward Berlin, trucks marked with committed phrases.
A cablegram from M. B. Holt of the Red Cross in Boulogne Sur Meer France reports Lieut L PF Albert in Paris hospital is able to ride in an automobile. Holt commends his cheerfulness and courage and notes Payette Idaho as his native state to be proud of the young officer.
In Battle Creek Michigan Dr J C Woodward requests public help locating relatives or friends of a woman found near the night train who is unconscious and identified only by a bank pass book issued to Mrs Richard F Hansen of Denver Colorado. She has a daughter Frankie Egan of Battle Creek Michigan. The woman was en route Denver to Payette Idaho with two trunks checked to Payette. Any information may aid identification and reunification.
A vivid 1918 letter describes Lillian Foster and a camp near the front. She details a long hot train journey, hospital wards filled with sick, daily work, and grand changes such as new orders banning civilian clothes. She recalls air raids, gas masks near at hand, and quiet nights away from heavy combat. She praises the Red Cross train services and notes meals at a French station, with 20 cent eggs and bread for soldiers. She mentions friends, mail hopes, and plans to visit Chas on leave, ending with reflections on fireworks-like skies from distant battles.
The Pendleton Roundup will be held September 19 20 and 21 under the Red Cross auspices. Bob Hall the famous broncho rider is slated to compete for the world championship and if victorious he expects a commission from Uncle Sam to bulldog the Kaiser. A man named William Sanders was arrested near Payette for petty larceny after taking from a patch and grainery. He pleaded guilty and was fined 15 dollars plus costs. authorities found wool and other stolen goods in his possession. Child Welfare Week will inaugurate weighing and measuring for three month to five year olds and registration of all children in the county. Lost two 22 caliber rifles near Washo.
Sees All Indies members are asked to submit all knitted work completed to date and strive to finish by August. J. E. Crouch, chairman, urges prompt return and total effort to meet the deadline.
E W Dunn left for Oregon to conduct two large sales and Miss Ruth Payne went to Portland to visit her brother Rays in business. Mr and Mrs Will Coughanour visited from North Powder. Mrs Frank Purcell and children arrived from Portland for a stay with friends. Robert Harris moved to Boise for work with Idaho Power. Several local trips include J F Orr to Emmett for a wedding and others fishing at the mountains. Moss Mercantile advertises used Fords and Buicks at bargain prices.
