Local notes report Mrs. Russell Snyder hospitalized in St Louis for observation. Visitors include Mrs. W E Matchett and Mrs. Houston Page with Rebecca and Jack. Families travel from Colorado to Texas and Virginia to Bristol for visits. Community members attend church events, safety meetings, and a national conference in Oklahoma City. Also guidance on tractor safety and fire prevention practices.

Queen and king contenders announced for the Halloween Carnival the high school hosts on Thursday Oct 31 with seniors Karen Briscoe and Ranny Toxmenice juniors Luwanda Christian and Don Christian sophomores Susan Doolen and Eddie Payne and freshmen Vera Nattier Allen Lawrence.
Mrs Virginia Payne of Vernon was initiated Monday evening at the Victoria Chapter O E S regular meeting. A number of guests attended the ceremony and refreshments were served in the dining room.
I C Bradley of Indianapolis industrialist named to the Illinois Central Rail road board to fill the vacancy caused by the ill health resignation of Thomas E Wilson. Bradley chairs the Ware house Advisory Board of Jones and Laughlin Steel and is a director of the same company. He was born in Dubuque Iowa on April 20 1899 and graduated Yale College in 1921 after serving in the Marine Corps in World War I.
A mystery resolved as Mrs. Jackson bought a maternity gown for Everett to wear in the production Princess for Tonight staged by a local group at the Franklin School PTA meeting in Centralia on Tuesday evening Sept 17. Cast included Bill Jenkins Chris Gergeni Jim Ballance Dwight Kline Junior Mullens Sonny Talbot Tim Cole Mark Cox and Fred Chance from Iuka with Bob Eagan as MC. Wardrobe managers were Mrs. Ballance and Mrs. Cox. The skit previously won at the local high school and will be performed again in Vandalia.
Ray's Quality Market marks one year in Patoka with a weekend celebration. A kiddie ride will operate all day Saturday beside the stone, inviting area children. An attractive door prize will be awarded to attendees who register, and a half page ad outlines special anniversary buys.
The Good Will Club met at Betty Howell’s home on Wednesday afternoon September 19 with eight members present. Officers were re elected and secret pals drawn. End of year gifts exchanged. Prizes went to Ada Letta Tina Alice and Ferne. Refreshments served by the hostess assisted by Ferne. Next meeting planned as all day on Wednesday October 2 with Tonie Sorrel.

Officers elected include Kathy Campbell as president Teresa Towler vice president Marianne Griffin secretary Sally Ann Jolliff assistant secretary Sheila Jolliff treasurer Frankie Shamp assistant treasurer Claudie Nattier room chair Brad Quayle membership chair. Installation planned October 5. project uses The Lost Monkey book and candy giraffes.
The week’s meals include Wiener on bun with baked beans and slaw on Monday, chili and pimento cheese sandwich on Tuesday, ham loaf with mashed potatoes on Wednesday, hamburger on bun with corn on Thursday, and macaroni and cheese with green beans on Friday. Each day offers fruit or dessert and milk.
The Doolen school reunion at Patoka Park drew many alumni from Alma Vernon Patoka Centralia Kinmundy and Decatur among others. A noon dinner followed by an afternoon of visiting concluded with plans for a 100 percent attendance at next year’s Patoka Park gathering on Sunday Sept 7.
Mr and Mrs Don Jones of St Elmo welcome a son William Randall born Sept 20 at Fayette County Hospital weighing 7 lbs 12 oz. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Dallas Robinson Vernon and Mr and Mrs Lewis Jones Alma. Mr and Mrs Marvin Bassett Alma announce a baby boy born Sept 25 at 8 37 am weighing 8 lbs 12 oz. The Kleemans Vernon celebrate 40th anniversary with about 140 guests and 100 cards in attendance wishing blessings and thanks.
Dale Whitehurst of Vernon received an advanced certificate in education. Bertwin E Hinsalt R R J Shobonier earned a bachelor of arts degree. Diplomas will be mailed since there is no summer commencement ceremony.
George Peddicord and another miner died in a cave-in at the Glen Ridge coal mine north of Centralia during the night shift on Thursday. Funeral arrangements are incomplete but will be handled by Cox & Martin Funeral Home.
Secretary Charles F. Carpentier says uniform investigators will distribute 1958 motor vehicle forms to outlets statewide. Applications for number reassignment start October 1 and current numbers must be retained by November 1. Fees rise on five items and 1958 plates will be steel with purple numerals, saving about 150000 over two years.
Funeral services for 90 year old Mrs Mat tie Linton who died Tuesday morning at Fayette County Hospital will be held Friday at 2 p m in the Linton Funeral Home Kinmundy with Rev Clifford Newcomb officiating. Burial will be in Thorpe cemetery west of Vernon Survivors include three sons Clarence Rhode Hill Vinus of Vernon Beryl of Kinmundy and two daughters Mrs Grace Jones Vandalia and Mrs Anabelle Leniger Vernon
Vernon community notes a PTC meeting at the school house tonight details show Friday event. Local residents attend weekend gatherings visit relatives and celebrate anniversaries with family and friends across nearby towns.
Envoy Carrier, the new head of the Salem Salvation Army Citadel, asks locals to donate usable clothing for needy persons and leave word at local stores. Army representatives visit each Saturday to collect items. Furniture donations can also be arranged for pickup. Drive with care everywhere.
