Memorial Day Memorial Service and Cemetery Roster

Memorial Day observances include a 2:00 p m program at the gymnas ium with a procession from the American Legion hall. The day honors fallen soldiers with marching bands, a Gettysburg Address, songs, prayers, and a march to Patoka Cemetery where three volleys will be fired. A long list of soldiers buried in Patoka Cemetery is read.

Large crowd at Bac calaureate services at high school

A large crowd attended the Bac calaureate services Sunday evening in the High School Auditorium. Rev. R. E. Willis of the M E Church South preached on The Equipment of Life with The Blessing of God be upon you as scripture. Rev. S. M. Spurgeon read twenty verses from Matthew five. Invocation by Rev. Farrell and benediction by Rev. M. D. Ballance. A duet by Alice Murfin and Mrs. Blanche Renner and three Community Chorus numbers were well rendered.

Former Teacher Visits Patoka on Ozark Vacation

Patrick Sullivan and his wife Iris visited Patoka from Friday to Sunday to see Mrs. Sullivan’s parents J. L. Simcox and relatives. Sullivan, former Patoka principal 1906 1911, now heads Illiopolis schools and coaches White Leghorn chickens in summers. Their daughters Iris Dorothy and sons Bob and Paul are pursuing studies and careers, yet the family still regards Patoka as home.

Prisoner Escape Near Vandalia Ends in Capture

A prisoner who escaped from Vandalia State Penal Farm was pursued by officers near Vernon on Wednesday evening. Shots were fired, the fugitive fled through a thicket, and a barbed wire trap caused a fall that left the pursuer briefly stunned and the escapee slipping away. The convict was later captured at Patoka that night.

Abe Lincoln Home Restored With Duplicated 80-Year-Old Wallpaper

Illinois state work crews will restore Lincoln's Springfield home preserving the bedroom with original wallpaper preserved under shellac. Fifty rolls of exact replica wallpaper from a Massachusetts company were provided free to the project. The rest of the room will feature replicas while the untouched wall remains preserved.

Paul Williams badly scalded in radiator incident

Paul Williams son of Willie Williams living east of town was badly scalded about the face and head Friday evening when he lifted a hot radiator cap to add water. The boiling water and steam burned his head and face. the injuries aren’t serious but recovery will take time.

The Household Science club met May 24 in the gym. Mrs. Troyer reported at the State Convention while Mrs. Nattier spoke on the District Convention. New officers were installed and a year plan set. several members were elected, and a program on home topics was presented by members led by Mrs. F. M. Smith.
