Poppy Day Observed by Patoka Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary appeals to Patoka residents to wear memorial poppies and donate to aid disabled veterans and children of veterans. The event, announced by Mrs Thelma Goff, will be led by Poppy Chairman Bettie Simcox and many volunteers distributing poppies across the village.

Vernon residents report a Sunday School weiner roast hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Klinge with many families attending. Methodist Bible School set for May 31. 70 in Sunday School May 22. multiple visits, travels, and hospitalizations noted. A separate Victoria Chapter 253 event honored Worthy Matron Blanche Gerrish. a weekend accident left Mr. and Mrs. John Lake seriously injured west of Brownstown.

Patoka Unit Meets With 16 Members In May Gathering

The Patoka Unit convened Friday May 20 at homes of Mrs. Charles Jordan and Mrs. Roy Malon with 16 members present. Vernon Unit disbanded and rejoined the Patoka Unit. Four new members were welcomed: Mrs. Mason Bassett Mrs. Don Murfin Mrs. Arthur Faulkenhain and Leta Hopkins. Major lesson "Pattern Adjustments" taught by Marie Brite using Mrs. H. M. Spurgeon as model. minor lesson postponed until June. The June lesson "Finishes in Sewing" set for June 17 at the Methodist Church basement with hostesses Mrs. Edwin Nattier and Mrs. Bruce Pugh.

Vacation Bible School at First Baptist Church

Vacation Bible School starts Monday May 30 at First Baptist Church with registration at 9 a.m. The two week program runs Monday through Friday May 30 through June 10 for ages 8 to 17. All children welcome. Refreshments served daily with Bible study character story and hand work.

Patoka Panthers 4-H Plans Ice Cream Supper and County Events

The Patoka Panthers 4-H Club met at Dennis Feather's home with 19 members and 11 guests. President Gene Bricker led pledges to the American and 4-H flags. They scheduled an ice cream supper for June 25 in the parking lot between Martin's Store and Schroeder's Garage, serving at 6 30 p.m. A school band may attend. Members heard talks on flowers, dairy calf shows, and hog labor-saving equipment by Carolyn Snider Jessie Lou Thomas and Marion Thomas. Marion County farm advisor Jim Brooks discussed county 4-H activities. 4-H Camp runs July 4 8 for ages 10-13 and July 25 29 for ages 14-20. Next talks by Kent Crawford and Charles Thalman. Meeting adjourned with games and refreshments. Next meeting June 20 at Deb Walker's home.

Rolland E Belcher of Mound Chapel is improving at Fayette county hospital in Vandalia after an ambulance transfer on Thursday afternoon May 19. He has a long heart ailment complicated by a touch of pneumonia. No visitors except immediate family. he welcomes cards and messages from relatives and friends.

Commencement Exercises for Pa toka Community High School

The ceremony occurs Friday May 27 at 8 p.m. in the high school gym. The program, written by the junior and senior English classes under adviser Mrs Eva Wasem, features the high school band directed by Mr Warren Besing and class vocal numbers. The four top Juniors will act as escorts for the graduates.

Surprise Party for David Britt

David Britt was surprised on Friday May 13 as thirteen seventh graders visited his home after school to celebrate his thirteenth birthday. They played group games, basketball, and enjoyed hot dogs potato chips dill pickles potato salad cupcakes and orange juice served by his mother. David received many gifts and guests departed wishing him many more happy birthdays. The Winsome Class met May 19 with eight members present and Mrs. Ben Nelson presiding.

Sermon on the Mount leads May L L Class devotional

The May meeting of the L L Class at the Christian Church featured a Sermon on the Mount devotional led by Mrs Maude Ellis. Doris Britt led prayer, scripture read from Matthew 7, and Lena Briscoe offered closing prayers. Dues were collected, minutes read, games enjoyed, with winners Kaye Jennings Jr Evelyn Ballance and Alta Logan. Hostesses Reba Gray and Maude Ellis served angel food cake strawberry ice cream and coffee to members and guests listed.
