Fancy Work Club Meets at Mrs Spurgeon Home
Mrs S M Spurgeon hosted the Fancy Work Club Friday with all members and three guests present. President Mrs L P Busch led the session and minutes were read by secretary Elsie Gray. A weiner roast was planned for Wednesday at Mrs H N Potts, prizes awarded to Eva Potts Ethel Rogier Bessie Wheritt and Anna Holland with Rogier taking the door prize. Refreshments served by the hostess and Eva Potts. The group adjourned to meet in June with Mesdames Simcox Jones Holland to entertain.

Albert L Wernsman 59 died 12 55 am Tuesday May 10 at St Marys Hospital Centralia after a two year illness He was born November 19 1895 in Patoka IL son of Henry and Cecilia Wernsman He married Clara Peyton in 1930 in Taylorville IL She preceded him in death He served in World War I two years with 18 months overseas He belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post 543 Patoka Surviving are a step daughter Mrs Byron Workman Moorhead MN two sisters Mrs Rollie Blankenship Clinton IL and Mrs Paul Prott Patoka four brothers Walter Centralia Everett Vernon Patoka James and Virgil Patoka Funeral held 1 30 pm Wednesday May 11 Cox Martin Patoka with Bro Tom McGee officiating American Legion Post 543 in charge Interment Patoka Cemetery.

District 100 wins two firsts in state music contest
District 100 captured two first places at the Grade School State Music Contest in Herrin on May 6. Over 1500 entrants competed. Dorothy Eastman won first for trombone solo while Don Christian Warren Bayliss and Garry Herrin earned first for cornet trio with Sue Wernsman as accompanist. They were led to Herrin by Director Warren Besing and Mrs Besing with Mr and Mrs Herlan Christian.

Funeral Services for Mrs Marion Rosenbaum Held Tuesday
Mrs Susie Lydia Rosenbaum 74 wife of Marion Rosenbaum died at home in Vernon Illinois on Sunday May 8 after a long illness. Born September 27 1881 in Fayette County she was the daughter of John and Sarah Jane Satterlee Smith. She married Marion Rosenbaum April 24 1929 at Salem Illinois. Survivors include her husband two stepsons Charlie Rosenbaum of Peoria Illinois Oscar Rosenbaum of Detroit Michigan a sister Mrs Henry Ward Brownstown and a brother Ira Smith Vandalia. Funeral services were held at 2 30 p m Tuesday May 10 from Patoka with Rev Sterling Kerr officiating. Interment Vernon Cemetery. Mr and Mrs Fred Peddicord Harvey Illinois visited the area weekend, Peddicord returning home Sunday night.

Walter Humes Home Destroyed by Fire on Farm
The Walter Humes residence on the Frank Crawford farm forty miles west of Patoka burned last Sunday morning at about 10 a.m. with all contents lost. The Humes family were away at Sunday School, and a milk house adjoining also burned. The family has moved to the U S Jolliff farm. Mrs. Martin Nelson underwent surgery at St Marys hospital in Centralia Saturday and is improving.
