State Banking Act Nears House Passage

State Auditor Orville E. Hodge reports the House banking committee has unanimously recommended passage of the new State Banking Act. The measure, drafted by a committee led by Hodge, codifies and modernizes laws dating to 1888 and awaits House floor action before the Governor's signature. Ambrose W. Hianbert of City National Bank of Centralia helped draft the bill.

John Wesley Picture Shown at Patoka Methodist Church Sunday

The film John Wesley in color will show at the Patoka Methodist Church Sunday May 8 at 7 30 p m. Rev Richard Stowe states the movie depicts the 18th century evangelist and educator and his missionary work including his heart warming faith and long travel by horseback. The pastor adds a public showing is open after the church first releases the film to Methodist churches.

The Padbergs buy and move into Tillie Richeson’s former property in Alcom. Others visit relatives in Texas Indiana Illinois and Tennessee with hospital and surgery news and family travel noted.

Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Mojonnier and Rev Kerr attended the Worker's Conference at the First Baptist Church of Odin on Tuesday. Mrs Rolla Sparks and Mr and Mrs Frank Petrea joined the Kaskaskia Association Young Woman's Auxiliary meeting at New Harmony Baptist Church in Centralia on Monday evening. Rev and Mrs Ralph Grill and their daughter of Grayville were 6 PM dinner guests of the Mojonniers on Friday.

Maytime Banquet honors 1955 High School seniors

The First Baptist Church hosted a Maytime Banquet at 6 30 on May 8 honoring the High School Class of 1955. The event featured readings songs and a sermon by Rev Curtis Martin of Calvary Baptist Church Alton Ill with Mrs Curtis Martin as guest. Melvin Rutledge spoke for the class and Mrs Rolla Sparks performed. A large list of attendees included faculty board members students and families from the local community.
