The poem by Merritt Caldwell urges patience and effort from staff at the State Hospital in Jacksonville Illinois. He emphasizes hard work, compassion, and staying with the job to help the hungry and cold and mentally troubled men committed there.
Rostra Club met Tuesday March 21 with president Mrs J R Wasem presiding. The group agreed to combine the March and April programs and meet at Mrs Ingvald Settems home. Members named women who affected political life and discussed Laws Affecting Women including teachers pensions citizenship status labor laws inheritance laws and jury service with local members presenting topics.
The WLS Home Talent Show drew actors from Patoka and nearby towns for three March performances in the Patoka high school gym. Masters of Ceremonies were Jack Jennings and Joe Livesay. Uncle Ezra was LaMonte Severens and Lulu Belle was Hetty Trueblood. Edith Schlytern of WLS Chicago directed for Edgar R. Rogier Post 543 American Legion, sponsor. Net proceeds totaled 110 dollars for the Legion home fund.
Roy Lambert age 39 of Pana and Ramsey died Monday March 20 1939 in Huber Memorial Hospital Pana after pneumonia. Funeral held Wednesday 2 PM at Mc Cracken funeral home Ramsey with Rev H N Wills. burial Ramsey Cemetery. Survived by his parents wife Sarah Hopkins four children Georgiana Wanda Lee Shirley Nirma Gene and siblings Edgar Harry Lawrence Helen Beck Juanita Craig Virginia Lambert.
Victoria Chapter No. 253 O. E. S. plans a Monday April 3 visit to Sandoval to observe the work. James Ballance will transport a busload. at least fifteen members are urged to attend. Meet at the gymnasium at 7 05 or at Jones and Martin's store at 7 10.
Comrade Raymond B. Draper, veteran of the World War, noted for bravery, is honored in a Legion ceremony. He died March 23, 1939 in Las Vegas Nevada and is buried at Patoka Cemetery after services conducted by Edgar R. Rogier Post No 543 American Legion.
Enoch Haley 59 of Centralia and formerly Patoka died Sunday March 26 1939 at his sister Ann Reeves home in Shobonier He worked at Patoka light plant and with Taylor Drilling Co before moving to Centralia He leaves two sisters two brothers and many relatives His funeral was held Sunday at Shobonier with interment in Farmer Cemetery.
Orville Meador born in Vernon Illinois June 11 1901 died March 17 1939 at age 37 years 9 months 6 days after illness in a Peoria hospital. He enlisted in the Peoria army in 1920 leaving four brothers and five sisters. Funeral March 19 1939 at the M E Church Vernon conducted by Rev Linder with interment in Meador Cemetery.
Mrs Clark Simcox and her daughter Jo stayed Monday afternoon and evening with Mr and Mrs Joe Hopkins at Salem. Frank Prolkelmeyer preached Sunday night at the M E Church South.
Mrs. Eliza Peddicord age 97 died after a long life as one of the county’s oldest citizens. Born October 30 1841 in Union County Penn she came to this country before the Civil War with her parents. She married Andrew Monroe Peddicord in 1865 and had three children Francis Marion Sarah Elizabeth. Funeral services were held March 26 1939 at the gymnasium Rev Goodin of St Louis officiating with interment in Patoka cemetery.
Wm Edwin Kidder former resident west of town died March 22 1939 in Alton Ill at age 65 He aided during the 1918 influenza epidemic and buried the dead He married Mary Morris Feb 22 1894 and left eight children seven living six grandchildren and one great grandchild Funeral at Mound Chapel Church with interment at Magassi Cemetery He is survived by sister Susie King and several relatives
The D. D. Club held a St Patrick Day gathering at Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Doolen home on Friday evening March 17. Games and contests included potato bowling with prizes to Mrs. James Wernsman and Mrs. Ralph Elliott. Gifts from mystery pals honored three members. Refreshments in green colors and shamrock favors completed the festive night. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. James Wernsman, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Genre, Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Mojonnier, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Elliott, and Mr. and Mrs. Homer Outhouse.
Chas H. Hill completed a real estate transaction this week purchasing the Ed Jones property on the town's east side. Mr and Mrs Taft Buck own a new Buick car in the local notices segment.
Marion County Democrats endorsed Ward P Holt for one of three circuit judge seats in the Fourth Judicial Convention to be held at Effingham on April 10. District delegates were chosen and invited to a six o clock dinner hosted by Judge Franklin R Dove with about a hundred attendees, including Holt and other candidates.
The Baptist Sunday School held a Wednesday evening shower at Mrs G J Wasem's home for Mr and Mrs Joe Livesay. The couple received many useful gifts while about thirty Sunday School members attended. Present were Mr and Mrs Fred Lawrence and daughter Hazel, Mrs J R Wasem and son John, and Mr Ben Livesay.
Easter Sunday morning at 5 30 o clock a Sunrise Prayer Service at the Christian Church invites members of all town churches to join in Holy Resurrection observance. A refreshing program will greet attendees and the plan is to rotate the service among town churches next year with the largest church attendance earning the call.
A March 14 meeting organized the Patoka Sportsmen Club to raise game for restocking and to protect wildlife during harsh weather. Officers elected: President J R Wasem, Secretary Clark Simcox, Treasurer Jesse Belcher, Membership Chair James Wasem. Next meeting March 27 at Patoka Library with invite to join and support depleted wildlife numbers.
The annual March birthday reunion occurred Sunday March 26 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Huffman in Assumption. Honorees included A L Irvin John Chance Ed Irvin Or Huffman Hazel Huffman and six month old Donald LeRoy Pleasant. Guests from Patoka Springfield Decatur and Taylorville attended and several family members were unable to appear. A L Irvin stayed with his daughter for a few days and returned home Wednesday night.
Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Ruth Talbert aided Mrs. Viola Atterbury Monday. E. E. McHaney and wife were Salem shoppers Friday. Ruth Talbert and son with Lawrence Talbert shopped in Patoka Saturday. George Hays and family visited with Mrs. Hays and son Sunday. L. B. Cozad visited Dorris Cozad’s family Sunday. Hays visited Kinmundy with her daughter last week. E. E. McHaney, John Talbert, and Lawrence Talbert visited Ross Reed and Mrs. Lizzie Gillmore at Central City Sunday. Wm. Powell of Odin and Harve Raver of Salem called on Chas. McHaney Sunday.
