Central Press Clipping Service of Indianapolis reports it reads about two tons of newspapers monthly to serve clients across Ohio Indiana Michigan Illinois Wisconsin Kentucky and Tennessee. The seven state region accounts for about 25 percent of all US papers and reflects national reading trends through local papers.
Illinois vets report sleeping sickness hit 85 counties from July through September with 6 033 cases and 1 535 deaths. They urge early vaccination in April or May, noting 70 000 horses on 14 565 farms immunized and only one in 425 vaccinated developing the disease.
Mr and Mrs W W Rickeson visit Asheville North Carolina with their daughter and family. Mr and Mrs F W Pugh of Vandalia were in town Tuesday and voted in the township election.
New York braces for the 1939 World’s Fair opening on April 30 with 15,000,000 expected visitors. Grover A. Whalen touts a dual entertainments experience as Broadway merges with fair attractions, including a 10,000-seat amphitheatre, Cuban and Merrie England villages, and a 2,000,000 children’s World with free admission.
Several Marion County farmers topped the hog market at National Stock Yards this week selling through St. Louis Producers cooperative. Roy Murray of Patoka earned 7.45 per cwt for 218 lb hogs, Clyde Garrett of Kinmundy 7.50 for 199 lb hogs, Bert Simcox of Patoka 7.40 for 182 lb hogs, and James D. Green of Salem achieved 7.45 ewt on well finished 208 lb hogs.
Twenty one members of the Victoria Chapter attended a Sandoval Chapter evening on April 3. Sister Berthaanbury served as Adah and Sister Josie Simcox as Chaplain after initiation. A musical program and refreshments followed with thanks extended to Eva Wasem W M and James Ballance for bus transport.
The Easter Morning sunrise prayer service will be held at the Christian Church Sunday at 5 30 a m. Large crowds have attended in the past and another large turnout is expected. The meeting place may rotate to other churches next year based on attendance. Attend services somewhere Easter, and this is a good place to begin the day.
Mrs. H. N. Potts entertained her bridge club Thursday afternoon of last week. Prize winners were Mrs. Orville Schroeder high, Mrs. Howard Riley second, Mrs. S. E. Altom low and Mrs. L. D. Altom floating prize. Guest Mrs. J. C. Beery attended and was awarded guest prize. Dessert course was served.
Mrs Wasem and Mr Mojonnier escort the Worthy Grand Matron during the East St. Louis Queen City Chapter official visit held on April 1. Mr and Mrs P J Mojonnier and Mr and Mrs Geo J Wasem and Mrs Oscar Hill attended the event.
Miss Mary Helen Humes of Centrali a visited over the weekend at the home of her grandmother Mrs Pannie Chandler.
A birthday dinner was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie McHaney for Mrs. Viola MecHaney to celebrate her seventy first birthday. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Eunice McHaney Mr. and Mrs. Everett Goodwin Gene Simpson and visitors including Mr. and Mrs. Ray Wells Norma Jean Bertha Raver Bobby and Jimmy. We wish her many more happy birthdays.
Relatives gathered Sunday to celebrate the birthdays of Glen Bowen Noble Bryant and Erma Bowen. Attendees included Irvin Bowen family Noble Bryant Herb Brumfield Joy Roseman Grandma and Grandpa Bryant with afternoon callers Mat Belcher Donald Adams and Evelyn Adams.
A county W C T U session gathered in Salem last Friday for a noon pot luck dinner. Speakers included Rev. Adah M. Hagler of Carlyle and Rev. A E Thomas. Attendees from the local area were Mrs Ethel Rogier Mrs Mary Was2m Mrs Rose Mojonnier and Mrs Ellen Simcox.
The Young Peoples of the Baptist Kaskaskia Association will hold their regular meeting at the Patoka Baptist Church Sunday afternoon with a large delegation expected from the member churches.
A Patoka Cemetery Association meeting of officers will be held Saturday night April 8 at 7 30 p m in the Village Hall. Agenda includes cemetery business and all who support the organization are urged to attend.
Mr. A L Vallow of Clinton spent the weekend here with his mother Mrs Josie Vallow. He was accompanied by Mrs Clyde Davis who had stayed at the Vallow home for several days.
Duncan's No 1 Liggett near Edgewood in Clay county yields oil at 2540 feet after winter drilling. New wells planned on H Huber and Cyrus Liggett farms with Ray Bumpus drilling. Wilson and Moran prospects plus Hoffmann and Evans tracts near McWhirter to be tested. Kingwood Oil Co plans further activity north of Effingham with multiple rigs moving to new fields in Illinois basin.
G. H. Blankinship pulled in an oil well from the Benoist pay sand five miles south of Nashville Illinois four weeks ago. Since then numerous new businesses have opened in Nashville and over six rigs are on location for a major summer drilling push. Benoist pay found at 1297 feet. two days of drilling expected after rigging up. Taylor Drilling Co. has a rig on location and aims to finish its well Tuesday evening.
The Baptist Missionary Society held a meeting last Wednesday afternoon at Mrs. P. J. Mojonnier's home. The next gathering will be hosted by Mrs. Don Crawford with Mrs. Walter Parks leading the program.
In Patoka Township and surrounding Marion County precincts Democrats carried multiple local contests. Key results show Meador and Lawson winning school trustee seats, Irvin defeating Mojonnier for four year term, and Wernsman and Elifritz seizing constable posts alongside Ballance unopposed for Justice of the Peace. Dry vs wet results favored dry in Patoka precincts with broader townships showing heavy dry majorities.
