Shade is Essential for Dairy Cows on Hot Days

Install four posts and a fenced ring, ensure good drainage, avoid salt under trees, and place shade away from high ground or near wires to reduce lightning risk.

Grain Supplements for Dairy Cows on Pasture

The article explains that pasture alone may not meet dairy cows needs. Cows producing 25 to 30 pounds of milk daily require 150 to 300 pounds of grass, which is impractical, so a grain supplement is advised. For 80 to 85 pounds daily, a mix of oats, corn, wheat bran, and barley fed at 1 pound per 4 to 6 pounds of milk suffices, and cows over 35 pounds per day should include a high protein concentrate.

Digestibility of Dairy Cattle Rations Study

Ohio experiment station tests show most dairy rations are less digestible than thought. Low protein diets depress digestibility more than higher protein ones, though similar protein levels vary. Low digestibility did not always mean reduced ration efficiency.

Cream Producing Cows Provide Monthly Farm Income

Properly fed cream producing cows offer a reliable monthly income. A typical cow yields 600 gallons of milk annually with 232 pounds of butterfat. Milk at 30 cents per gallon equals 180 dollars, plus 20 dollars from fertilizer value, totaling 200 dollars. If no milk market exists, butterfat at 40 cents a pound brings 92.80 dollars to a creamery, and skim milk on the farm adds 25 dollars in feed value.

Cold drafts cause pneumonia and similar ailments. provide ventilation without drafts. A staff is the safest way for one man to lead a bull, applicable to all cattle.
