Patoka F F A Chapter earned the Illinois Bankers Association Activities Plaque for its past year’s program. Three local members attend the State Convention this week with Monte Page to join the State F F A Band. Charles Thalman and Dean Black are delegates. Charles Nattier to receive State Farmer Degree Friday.
Ladies Fancy Work club met Friday afternoon at Mrs L P Basch home. President Mrs L M Spurgeon led the meeting with secretary Mrs H N Potts. Elsie Gray led the entertainment and prize winners were Ethel Rogier for In contest Eva Potts for Rhyme. Gladys Jones led the winning knot untie side. Refreshments by host Mrs Basch with Rebecca Matchett singing. No meetings in July or August. Elsie Gray to entertain in September.

A large crowd attended the wedding of Barbara Simpson and Lucas Crawford at Fredonia church. Community wishes them long happiness. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Simpson visited their grandson Michael in Centria hospital, recovering from pneumonia. Edith Campbell and Ruth Talbert, Frances Hicks visited, returning to St. Louis with Oscar. Willie Perkins and wife returned from Louisiana visit. Leo from an Air Force base in Florida visited. Schools were out Friday. several children vacationing. Henry Meredith and sons visited Forrest Wadkins and family. Alva Williams and Eugene and Bill Griggs from Bridport visited the Merediths. James Hyde bought the Howse place and is bulldozing. Henry, Carl Meredith and Ted Payne take a twoweek vacation. Harvey and Melvin Charlton visited Melvin Meredith for a wiener roast before an electrical storm. Macey Pauley, brother of Nannie Gaines, died Saturday and was buried Monday at Martin cemetery. Office hours suspended June 20 through July 8.
Local residents share news of visits and gatherings. Mr and Mrs L E Green visited kin in Kinmundy and northern towns while families attended a silver wedding anniversary for Clayton Slifer. Journeys span Hammond Hammond to Baltimore Nogales Eau Claire Fresno and Chicago area visits.
A short course for DHIA testers is scheduled for June 11 through 16 at the University of Illinois Urbana. Registration runs 8 to 9 a.m. June 11 in Room 341 Animal Sciences Laboratory. Classes run 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. daily, with Saturday ending at noon.

Mrs. Lora Cooley of Vernon announces the engagement of her daughter Jewell to Richard H. Davis son of Mr and Mrs Jake Davis of Patoka. The wedding is planned for June 10.
A March 27 1956 letter from Harold A Wolfe Director School Lunch Program praises Supt. Harvey Munger for an adequately nourished and balanced lunch operation at a moderate price. The review by Mrs Helen M Walters notes pleasant surroundings and conformity with the National School Lunch Act, urging continued cooperation.
Vernon resident Vernon Miss Alta Lee Hortin married Beryl Dean Leininger in a double ring ceremony at the home of Rev. J. T. Johnson in Shobonier. Attendants were Betty Garmen and Frank Emerick of Vandalia. The couple will reside at 1118 West Jefferson in Vandalia.
The Girls met on May 29 for their ninth annual gathering in Patoka at Hopkins Cafe. Eighteen members joined for dinner, sharing memories, a short business meeting, and photos, with plans for a lake pot luck dinner next year.
State Supervisor of Home Economies Education reports on a May 1 1956 visit to the school homemaking department. Miss Ahlf is praised for a well run, thorough program with active Future Homemakers and a large adult class. Library adequate but will be updated. new steam iron and cabinet praised. Suggestions include replacing two older sewing machines and adding small electrical appliances for the food area.
Rural school graduation exercises will be held at Salem Community High School on Friday June 15 at 8 p m. County superintendent Paul B Chance reported. Graduates from Fredonia School include Paul R Jett Ernie Hobbs Arthur B Renfro Nancy Lee Jett William R Hobbs Gordon H Kemp Jr and Wilma Gean Shuler. From Steele School the graduates are Carole Ann Bowen Gloria Jean Snyder and Oneita Garnell Baumann.
Patoka to hold a village clean up day next Tuesday June 12. A hired truck will collect trash left at street edges. Hauler requests that items be in small boxes for one man to carry. barrels are to be avoided.
Mrs. Emma Walton moved from Fayette County Hospital to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis for observation. Many locals visited over Decoration Day and Memorial Day. The Woman's Society of Christian Service raised 118.76 for a Cancer Drive. A large youth meeting of the Kaskaskia association drew 153 attendees with refreshments afterward.
Dick Feather of Patoka did not attend the Silver Dollar Day awards last Saturday and forfeited 25 Silver Dollars. Awards this week will be made on the parking lot between Martin's IGA store and Schroeder Motor Co. John Natter, Patoka, received a $10 award while Johnnie Goodin was absent. David Lynn Adams and Ormell Simcox, both of Patoka, won $5 each. Carroll Mojonnier and Margie Phelps were absent and forfeited their $5 awards.
Miss Jane Nattier and Richard Adams were united in marriage on Monday May 28 in St Louis Missouri. The couple is a Patoka High School class of 1956 pair now living in Patoka at a home they recently purchased from John Barnes. Mrs Adams is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Dale Nattier and Mr Adams is the son of Mr and Mrs Maurice Adams.
County Superintendent of Schools Paul B Chance announced a Teachers Examination to be held at his office Friday June 8 starting at 9 a m. The exam is open to anyone with 60 semester hours of college work including six semester hours in education.
Boys ages 9 to 12 are invited to City Park for the first Little League practice of the season tonight at 5 p m. The event aims to kick off the season with new players and early team formation.
The Sunbeam group held a meeting on Saturday June 2 electing Connie Walker as president and Chris tie Bozarth as vice president. Jo Lynn Easton was secretary and Emil Nattier treasurer with Linda Prater asst treasurer. A room committee was named by the president and a membership committee by the vice president. Retiring president Leslie Talbott welcomed Patty Redburn and new members Tonie Prater and Jo Lynn Easton. Refreshments and balloons followed. Next meeting is June 16 with officer installation.
