Peach and Apple Crops Forecast Up From Last Year
Illinois crops show better prospects than year ago with July 1 conditions at peaches 64 percent up from 48 last year and a ten year average of 40. Apples on July 1 at 60 percent down from last year’s 68 but above the 46 percent ten year average. Summer apples are excellent while fall and winter apples vary from good to poor.

The village announces that driveways and approaches to the junk yard are cleared and opened at great expense with junk piled in one area by a bulldozer. Anyone dumping junk along roadways or bridges will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Mosaic Disease of Wheat Covers Third of State
Illinois farmers urged to plant mosaic resistant wheat for 1940 crop. Disease started in Madison County in 1919 and now found in 34 counties from the Wabash to the Mississippi, across central Illinois. It reduces yield, spreads via drainage water, and seed is not a carrier. Recommended north central varieties include Wisconsin Pedigree 2 and Hed, while southern Illinois should consider Fulhio Nabob Fulcaster Wabash and Thorne.

Old Capitol Building to Be Restored to Original Design
The Vandalia State House will be restored to its original design by the Division of Architecture and Engineering. Illinois’ third Capitol served as the seat of government for one year in 1837 before the capital moved to Springfield. Erected for $16,000, it was sold to Fayette County in 1857 and repurchased by the state in 1919.
