The Crossley poll measures radio program popularity via statisticians calling random city samples during broadcasts. NBC sends John Gunther to Europe to assist Kaltenborn with coverage, expanding international reporting with a roving assignment.
Lim and Abner are the only radio stars in Hollywood who seldom rehearse finale shows in the studio. They write their script at the Jot Em Down Store office in Columbia Square, rehearse and time it, then head to the studio, rarely arriving more than five minutes beforehand.
Arkansas traveler Bob Burns describes his Hollywood office pipes, his yearly pipe spree, and a favorite briar paid a dollar for years ago. A car carrying Epworth League members overturned near Patoka Friday evening injuring three and killing Mrs. Virgil Halterman of Flora. Driver Frank Smith suffered chest injuries and was not expected to survive. E L Jones of Flora had minor cuts. Mrs. Halterman, 36, died at St. Mary's Hospital in Centralia after the crash that happened near a curve as the group traveled to a Salem event. An inquest followed at Bald Ridge Funeral Home.
The schedule lists July matchups including Cardinals versus Vernon and Cubs versus Yankees on Monday July 10, followed by Phillies versus Cubs and Vernon versus Zion on Wednesday July 12. On Monday July 17, Yankees face Zion and Phillies meet Vernon, with July 22 seeing Cardinals against Zion. Ray Irvin of Wichita Falls Texas visited the Irvin family this week.

Mr. and Mrs. E L DeLay and family, recently in Montana for four weeks, returned home here late last week.
In 1937 J. W. Alexander and B. S. Livesay leased 165 acres in Barnhill township Wayne County known as the Sarah Harris farm. Illinois Mid-Continent Co. took an assignment, built a derrick, and plans a test as oil strikes reach producing sands nearby. The pair also leased Simpson Estate land, 270 acres, with a drilling contract by W. Walter Pryor of Mattoon for a near-future test.
A cattle transaction dispute culminated in Judge Ballance's court with Chas Wagoner of Mulberry Grove suing Mr Shaffer of Omega township. The jury awarded damages of 20 dollars to Wagoner after deliberations following testimony and pleas.
A July Fourth celebration at Carroll Grove six miles west of town featured a Cracker Neck bout versus the East St. Louis Colored Colts, won 3 to 0 for the visitors. Red Shim Belcher and his WDZ band performed in the evening as crowds gathered. Net profit of $190.46 above expenses was raised for Pratt cemetery funds.
George Jett reported killing a large rattlesnake seen on the road near the Buss bridge Friday evening while en route to Patoka. It had nine rattles and a button and was the third rattler killed in the area recently by fox hunters near a creek bank logs. Nearby residents and families attended Centrica works on July 4. Dave Pauley of Staunton visits Eliza Farmer.
Illinois farmer lands are soggy due to poor drainage. E W Lehmann and T A Pitzen note that more than one third of fields require drainage to return productive use. Maintenance keeps drains working, preventing overgrowth, silt buildup, and tile line clogging.
Members of the Methodist Epworth League from Patoka and area car pooled to Bryan Memorial Park in Salem for a Friday evening gathering. The program included a weiner and marshmallow roast, devotional exercises, talks, and group singing.
Florence Thalman 75 died Sunday after four years illness at her Centralia home 816 East Broadway with husband Oscar Thalman and two children surviving. Born Patoka 1870 she lived in Centralia twenty years and belonged to Cumberland Presbyterian Church Dora Bell camp and Royal Neighbors. Funeral services were held July 5 at Boggs funeral home and burial followed in Patoka cemetery.
Miss Clara Mores, a well known citizen, died Tuesday July 4 at 10 o clock in Decatur Hospital. Funeral services are incomplete as we went to press.
