District Grade Meet Sparks St Elmo Patoka and Sandoval Wins

St Elmo beat Patoka 35 34 in the championship as Sandoval and Patoka claim second and third in the District tournament held at Sandoval Grade School February 10 13. St Elmo and Patoka advance to the regional at Centralia.

W. C. T. U. Notes On Church Meeting

Thirteen women met at the M. E. Church Tuesday afternoon to tack carpet rags. Next meeting is March 2 at 1 o'clock. The regular W. C. T. U. meeting has moved from March 2 to April 6 at the Christian Church with Mrs. C. J. Hill as leader and Mrs. W. E. Field as devotional leader.

Thomas Robert Altom 71 a Patoka resident and long time J Altom & Sons partner died February 14 1948 at his residence He was born August 18 1876 and married Lorena Livesay in 1917 They note a son Robert D and one grandson survived Funeral services were held February 16 1948 at the Patoka Methodist Church with Rev McHaney and Rev Friesner Interment followed in Patoka Cemetery

Patoka Grade School News Highlights Student Activities

Second graders made science booklets and hosted a Valentine party with ice cream refreshments. The Safety Club program impressed students while film slides taught health and safety. Charles Smith missed three days due to illness. The grade school boys lost to St Elmo 35 to 84 in district play but earned a trophy and advancement to regionals in Centerville. First regional game set for Feb 17 at 7:00 pm. earlier wins over Young School 31 to 26 and Sandoval 28 to 24 in overtime. Kinmundy defeat 41-8 on Feb 19. Two new seventh graders, Robert and Frederick Watkins, joined from Kenney.

Fancy Work Club Meeting At Mrs Spurgeon Home

Members of the Fancy Work Club met at the home of Mrs. S M Spurgeon on Friday February 18 with Mrs H N Potts presiding. Mrs Josephine DeLay led entertainment and contests awarded prizes to Mrs Elsie Gray Mrs Eva Potts Mrs Rebecca Matchett and Mrs Cleo Walker. A letter from Mrs James Pope, visiting in Athens Greece, was read and praised by the group. Refreshments were served with Mrs Potts assisting.

Rural Youth Holds Annual Meeting at Southern Gardens

The Marion County Rural Youth hosted its annual banquet February 13 at Southern Gardens near Salem. Earl Purdue and Mrs. Eldon Branch offered congratulations for two successful years. Miss Marion Semon spoke on Leap Year and a film titled America the Beautiful was shown. Ruth Jackson led singing, with Odell Henson as toastmaster and Richard Seidel as correspondent.

Patoka 4-H Club notes leaders winners and contests

The Patoka Panthers held a February meeting at the Bowen home with reports on State and District meetings. Carroll Mojonnier and George Snider discussed the District Banquet at Centralia and a State Recognition Banquet in Springfield for Carroll. The club aims to improve in the National Curve Picture Judging Contest and plans the March 10 gathering at Deneen Hopkins home.

Moose Lodge Vandalia Initiates 100 Members at Gala

The Vandalia Moose Lodge announces a Sunday initiation of a class of 100 candidates into the Order. A Mattoon degree team will conduct the ceremony at 1 30 p m followed by lunch. Evening entertainment includes music and dancing. At a prior meeting W T Willet won 14 prize and Lester Pennington received a life membership valued at about 300.

The Patoka Methodist Church lists programs led by Pastor M. W. Friesner including Church School at 9 30 a m and Morning worship at 10 45 a m on Sunday. Youth Fellowship at 7 00 p m and Evening Services at 7 30 p m. A monthly pot luck supper is set for Wednesday at 6 45 p m in the church basement followed by a Thursday prayer service. Last Sunday the birthday wishes were sung for Valda Dian Jones Effie Nichols and Mildred Wasem.
