Activities and visits across Patoka Vernon Center Vandalia and nearby towns. Families travel for trains and military postings while clubs host meetings and religious groups plan World Day of Prayer events. Local residents move addresses and attend services with birthdays and club gatherings noted.
Mr and Mrs Bruce Pugh celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary on Saturday February 12 with a family dinner at 6 pm in Patoka Missouri. The couple have four children Paul Walker Robert and Dean and Conrad Haefner and eight grandchildren. Four grandchildren Alan Karen Emil Dean and Paulette celebrated birthdays.
The women of Patoka and Vernon will observe World Day of Prayer on Friday February 25 at an all day program in the Patoka Methodist Church. All denominations are cordially invited to attend. Please bring sandwiches. coffee will be served.
The Loyal Leaders Class of the Christian Church met for its February gathering with Mrs. Lena Briscoe and Mrs. Edna Griffin as hostesses. The evening featured hymns, a devotional on The Works of God, prayers, and business notes.
Jim Wasem son of Mr and Mrs James Wasem earns Dean's Scholarship List for second straight semester at Illinois Wesleyan University Bloomington. He is a Sigma Chi member and plays on the university basketball and baseball teams. MR AND MRS MAURICE COX HONORED AT FAREWELL PARTY. Mr and Mrs Maurice Lee Cox left Saturday for Okmulgee Oklahoma and were honored at a farewell party Saturday evening at the American Legion Hall.
Willing Workers held a Thursday evening class meeting in the Methodist Church basement with Sue Talbot as president and Shirley Griffin reading the secretary's report. The event featured a Biblical crossword contest and an Abraham Lincoln quiz with many members attending, followed by Valentine refreshments served by Robert Eagan and Dorothy Griffin.
The week’s meals list beef and noodles, meat pie, hamburger, vegetable soup, and macaroni and cheese with sides for each weekday from February 21 to 25. A Sunday dinner guest note mentions Mr and Mrs Joe Barnick and Mr and Mrs Charles Lensford visiting O F West and family.
In the Oak Leaf published at Oakland Naval Hospital Artie Fuson and William Stephens wed February 4 1955 with Chaplain James W. Paul officiating. Stephens led scoring in a 72 43 win and 80 56 loss for the Acorns. Dale Jones was honored with a birthday chicken dinner hosted by Mr and Mrs Sam Jolliff at their home.
Miss Marie Black sister of Tokopa FFA president was named FFA Chapter Sweetheart at the February 14 Valentine Party. She received a white satin FFA Sweetheart Jacket from her brother Frank, with retiring Sweetheart Martha McWhirter crowning her with a crown of hearts. The citation highlighted aims such as Community Service Thrift Leadership Recreation Scholarship and Love of Country Life. Afterward FFA members served refreshments in the cafeteria.
The young married people at Patoka Christian Church formed a new class named Bereans on Tuesday night. Officers include John Barnes president Bob Thalman vice president Peggy Tune secretary and Virginia Thalman treasurer. Meetings will be the first Thursday each month with coffee and donuts after.

William Thomas Douthitt 78 of St. Louis died February 6 1955 after a long illness. Born near McLeansboro Illinois he lived in Patoka 1896 1900 worked as a salesman and was a 25 year member of Lodge 180 A F & A M and Knights of Pythia. National Future Farmers of America Week runs February 19 26 highlighting FFA’s four pillars learning to do doing to learn earning to live living to serve.
A Glenarm reader recalls a Springfield area scene where a Salem High School senior and a Patoka boy discuss basketball. The girl favors Salem but laments Patoka as a rival, recounting a past date mishap and vowing revenge if Salem loses. The exchange ends with a playful warning about refereeing.
