Census of Distribution and Manufactures underway soon

The census of distribution and manufactures will begin in a week as an experimental effort to reveal price discrepancies between producers and consumers. It will collect detailed business profiles from manufacturers wholesalers retailers and others while excluding profit data. District supervisors will lead field work in several counties with exceptions for large cities.

Alma mail carrier marks 25 years on Route 2

Jake Johnson of Alma Illinois completed 25 years of continuous service as a mail carrier on Route 2. He started on Route near Tonti Marion County, later moved to Alma, traveled over 201 thousand miles, and remained within six miles of his home post office during his career. His family aided during bad weather and he dreams of flying someday.

Methodist Tea Meeting Brings Valentine Themed Fun

The Silver Tea of the Methodist Church met at W H Cain's home on Feb 6 with hostesses Miss Ruby Cain and Miss Ruby Eagan. Mrs Donna Jennings and Mrs Mae Logan organized a playful program with surgeons and nurses, heart crafts, contests and duets by Miss Ruby Cain and Miss Ruby Eagan. Davis Jennings won the main prize. Mrs Eagan held the booby prize. Bobby Jennings won best valentine verse. Vivian Stiles of Sandoval, a guest, guessed the number of red hearts correctly in a battle count. Refreshments were served and the group plans to meet in March with Mrs Mae Simcox.

Infant Dean Cozad Dies in Brief Illness

An infant three days old, Dean, son of Mr and Mrs Clarence Cozad, died after a short illness at their Fairman home. Funeral and burial were in Fredonia cemetery, with wide sympathy offered to the young parents.

Local speed officer injured in Vandalia motorcycle fall

Harold Bigelow, a local speed officer, was thrown from a motorcycle in Vandalia Tuesday afternoon and suffered a scalp wound needing several stitches. He stayed in Greer Hospital for a couple days. officials said the accident was not more serious.

Walter L. Simcox of the United States Navy has left Philadelphia for Buenos Aires aboard the cruiser Salt Lake City. The ship, stationed at Hampton Roads, Virginia, will circle the globe this year and next.
