Crawford Couple Celebrates 60th Wedding Anniversary

Mr and Mrs John P Crawford celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary with an open house from 1 to 4 pm and a family dinner at 6 pm. Numerous friends called to congratulate including Mr and Mrs J Mojonnier and many relatives from Vandalia Effingham Clinton Carlyle Newton and Lucas.

Mrs. Nell Buss Pugh Dies in Centralia at 64

Nell Buss Pugh age 64 died Saturday December 18 1948 at St Marys hospital Centralia. She was born in Patoka daughter of Irve and family survived by husband Roy A. Pugh two children James and Jane two brothers W D and W L Buss and three sisters Anna Velma and Eno. Funeral services were held December 21 at Queen Boggs funeral home Centralia and Patoka Methodist Church with two ministers officiating. Interment in Patoka cemetery.

The Woman's Society of Christian Service held its annual Christmas party December 17 in the Vernon church basement. Decorations included a lighted tree evergreen centerpieces and white candles with favors. New officers elected for the coming year are Isabel Doolen president Mabel Snyder vice president Helen Betts secretary Hazel Cox treasurer. Mrs Myrtle Sprinkle of Salem attended as a guest.

Miss Pearl Cummins Weds John F. Nelson in Sandoval

Miss Pearl F. Cummins, youngest daughter of Basil Cummins of Sandoval, married John F. Nelson, son of Martin Nelson of Patoka, on December 4, 1948 at 2 p.m. The ceremony, performed by Rev. Ora Stone at his home, was witnessed by family and friends. The bride, once a Sandoval cafe worker, now begins married life with the groom, a Patoka Co op Elevator truck driver, in Patoka.

Loyal Leaders Class Holds Christmas Party

On December 16 the Loyal Leaders Class of the Christian Church met in the social rooms for its annual Christmas party. Officers elected for the coming year were Evelyn Ballance president Lucille Eagan vice president Ruth Foltz secretary treasurer Alta Logan assistant secretary treasurer. Mr Orville Hubbard was chosen teacher. A gift exchange and refreshments followed the meeting with Mr W E Field receiving a gift. Former members Mr and Mrs Charles Meyers attended as guests.

Williams Cafe Employees Hold Christmas Party

Williams Cafe employees held their Christmas party on Monday night December 20. After an oyster supper the group gathered around the tree for a gift exchange. A barber shop quartet provided entertainment while guests Mr and Mrs Frank Williams attended along with several staff members.

Walton dies after illness in Vernon area

Glen D. Walton of Vernon died December 18 at Jefferson Barracks Hospital after a serious illness. He is survived by his wife and two children, his mother Mrs Carye Thompson of Granite City, two brothers Donald of Walnut, Illinois and Gene of Granite City, and grandparents Mr and Mrs George Walton and Mr and Mrs J W Epps. Funeral services were held in Granite City and burial followed in Vernon Cemetery.

Christmas Program Planned by Patoka Christian Church

The Patoka Christian Church will stage a Christmas program on Friday night December 24 at 7 30 featuring recitations songs plays and a cradle roll for babies including Denise Foltz Darrell Foltz and Susie Kelly with performances by Charlene Hasslett Mike Johnstone and Nickey Johnstone. The event includes scripture reading by Darrell Foltz and a benediction by Harold Belcher with the Baby Jesus notional scene and a White Christmas finale.

Miss Dorothy Frailie became the bride of John Barnes Jr at the First Baptist Church East St Louis on December 18. The groom’s parents are Mr and Mrs John Barnes of Patoka and the bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Hallie Frailie of Shobonier. Rev Ray Dunbar performed the single ring ceremony. A reception shower followed at the groom’s home with many gifts. The couple will reside in Patoka.

Jones Family Christmas Dinner Celebrated at Roy Jones Home

Patoka Lions Club Tail-Twister fuels lively regualr session

Nineteen Lions met for dinner and a highly praised meeting led by Tail-Twister Marc Cox who issued playful penalties and creative games. Seven new prospects were voted in, Ladies Night is rescheduled to January first Tuesday, and Lion DeLay plans a trade involving a long-handled garment with ribbons as Foltz prepares to report outcomes at the January 4 gathering.
