Victoria Chapter installs for coming year in Pa

Victoria Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star held a public installation at Sonic Temple in Powor, December 13. Joy Boyd, retiring matron, presided as the new officers were installed with George Wasem, Keith Pike, and Darvin Jones as escorts. New officers include Mary Meryman as Worthy Matron and Rita Hill as Chaplain among others. The ceremony featured songs and floral tributes, followed by a reception with fruit salad and coffee. Guests came from Sandoval, Odin, Vandalia, Bristol, Virginia, and Patoka.

Christian Church Christmas Pageant Dec 19 730 PM

The Christian Church will present the pageant The Christmas Angel on Sunday December 19 at 730 p m featuring Mary Joseph Wise Men Shepherds and the Angel Choir plus a children’s group. The church will also hold its annual Christmas party on Christmas Eve inviting all to join in fellowship.

Mound Chapel Church Notes Sunday School and Service

Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. with Virgil Herrin supervisor. A birthday song was sung for Miss Nina Torrence. Evening preaching at 7:30 p.m. led by Ancel Arnold. A large crowd heard a Greenville College quartet and gospel message by Brothers Cook of Ottawa, Canada.

Belchers Entertain Former Neighbors at Patoka Dinner

Mr and Mrs Rolland Belcher entertained former neighbors from Peru Illinois at their Patoka area home last Sunday December 12. In the afternoon visitors included Mr and Mrs X and Mrs Ethel Klinge from the vicinity.

Funeral services for Sgt Paul K Spurgeon Sunday

Funeral services for Sgt Paul K Spurgeon will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday December 19 1948 in the Patoka Gymnasium officiated by Rev D S Lacquement of Centralia. The Patoka post of the American Legion will conduct last rites and interment is in Patoka Cemetery. Spurgeon a 1943 Centralia Township High School graduate attended Junior College and the University of Illinois before enlisting September 20 1943. He served with the 100th Division 897th Infantry Tenth Army and was killed December 18 1944 near Monte France earning posthumous Silver Star and Bronze Star. He is survived by his parents a sister Patricia J Spur geon a brother William Marion and other relatives. Interment to follow in Patoka Cemetery.

Memorial Services for Pvt Dean Jett in Fredonia Church

Memorial services are planned at 1:00 p.m. Friday December 17 at the Fredonia church for Pvt Dean Jett who was killed in action December 25, 1944 while serving with General Patton's Third Army in the 80th Division. He was born January 1, 1923 in Fredonia and survived by his parents, one daughter Norma Jean, a sister Thelma Perrine, three brothers Alva Everett and James, and grandmother Mrs Emma Jett. Interment will follow at Fredonia Cemetery.

The Vernon Better Neighbors' Club met December 8 with Mrs. Margaret Lawrence hosting. President Alice Wilson led the business session while Fern Gehyken and Ruth Lawson directed entertainment. Funeral Services for Marine Hero Pfc William Parish Held

The casket of Pfc William Logan Parish arrived in Salem Illinois via the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and was met by the Salem American Legion Escort. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. at McMackin Funeral Home with Rev Van Loar in charge before a Military Rites ceremony and burial in Sandoval Cemetery. Parish born March 30 1921 in Sandoval Illinois enlisted August 5 1942 served in Bougainville and the Marianas and was killed on Guam July 27 1944. He received the Purple Heart Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He leaves his parents Lincoln Parish and many relatives.
