Local farmers tour shows good farming practices in Marion County

University extension reps Alfred Tate J B Cunningham collaborate with Farm Adviser Blackburn to lead Marion County farmers on a August 30 tour of three farms near Alma Romine Prairie and Centralia. The program features contour terraces pasture lime and soil treatments plus discussions on soil fertility pastures and livestock feed.

A Higgins family reunion at Mr. and Mrs. Dave Higgins home in Patoka brought mother, two sons and four daughters together for the first time in 35 years. Drainage Camps Merge with SCS Operations in Illinois

The U S Department of Agriculture merges farm drainage work in Illinois with the Soil Conservation Service to coordinate erosion and flood control. Five CCC camps at Tuscola New Canton Gilman Havana and Annawan support drainage districts and cooperate with commissioners. The move aligns drainage with erosion control and flood programs and with the University of Illinois College of Agriculture.

Aged Citizen Emma R Smith Dies at 80 in Vernon

Obituary notes Emma R. Smith born July 30 1859 Charleston Illinois lived in Vernon Patoka Lebanon and other towns. She married Anthony Arnold in Belleville Illinois 1879 producing four children Maud Myrtle Ethel Earle, all but Maud predeceased her. She later married F M Smith. died August 18 1989 in Vernon. Funeral August 20 at Vernon M E Church. Interment Patoka cemetery. Maude Hatch expresses thanks to friends and local organizations.

Rosy Clouds Over Illinois Oil Basin

In 1937 Illinois completed 292 producing wells with about 712 million barrels of oil. By end of 1938 over 2 000 more wells struck oil, production near 24 million barrels. In the first six months of 1939 about 1 300 wells added, Illinois contributing roughly 34 million barrels, exceeding 1937 and 1938 totals.

Baseball School for Kids Closes in Medford

The Medford school district closes the fourth annual six week summer baseball school led by Coach Riney Cook. It drew about 40 youngsters daily aged six to eighteen and named three top players Dean Meador Ralph Brock and Howard Joki to receive plaques. Dean Meador 14 Ralph Brock 16 and Howard Joki 11 were honored for promise. Dean Meador visited with grandmother Mrs Lizzie Wasem before returning home.

Goodbye Mr Chips comes to Lyric Salem for weekend show

The Goodbye Mr Chips film based on James Hilton novel opens Sunday and Monday at the Lyric Theatre Salem.
