Pasadena City College board approved a $700 expenditure for entertainment and a speaker for a Mexican cultural fete next Tuesday. The plan includes a mariachi band a dance troupe and Nati Cisneros as speaker, amid concerns about costs and educational value. A separate undetermined grant, potentially $1,500, would fund seven forensics team members to travel to national finals in Akron Michigan.
Fourth District Republican candidates clashed over Nixon welfare reform at Arcadia meeting. James Booth Hugh Jennings Pat Elings and Jack Alex defended or attacked the plan as incentive to lift people from welfare while John Rousselot urged precision and Bill McColl called it inflationary and favored a pilot. An exchange over a jail sentence involving Jennings and an IRS dispute spotlighted ethics and write-in confusion from 1966.
Hudson Roysher of Arcadia is named chairman of the Department of Art at California State College Los Angeles, effective June 12. A Cal State faculty member since 1954, he is noted for design and education of ecclesiastic silver and ceremonial pieces, and was named outstanding professor for 1965-66 at Cal State TaA, receiving a $4,000 grant.
The Friends of the Arcadia Public Library hold their 32nd annual book sale, Twice Sold Tales, from 6 to 9 pm Friday and 9 am to 3 pm Saturday at 20 W. Duarte. Some 10,000 volumes span history, biography, art, literature, science, travel, and more with prices from 5 cents. Proceeds fund library cultural programs and equipment.
Pasadena Planning Commission will review preliminary plans for a new Tournament of Roses float building near Seco and Rosemont Avenues in Brookside Park. The move follows loss of previous facilities after highway and city takeovers. The vote also covers leasing Brookside Park to the Tournament for 1 year with conditions including fencing landscaping and design approvals.
Frank Negrette, 33, on weekend furlough from Chine Prison, was booked on suspicion of murder after a five year old girl died in a traffic crash at San Gabriel and Rosemead boulevards. Police say the car is involved in the alleged assault and fatal incident. The child's family members were hospitalized in satisfactory condition at County USC Medical Center.
David A. Ralston acting zoning administrator grants permission to construct a Vagabond Motor Hotels tennis motel at 2863 E Colorado Blvd 2860 82 Nina St and 85 N Sunnyslope Ave The project includes a 12 by 30 foot loading space in a portion of a parking lot for loading and service use.

Pasadena City College fencers cap awards as Chrys Walton reports PCC coach John Hirolo places third in after dinner speaking and Mal Lumby gains a superior rating in extemporaneous.
In a reorganization meeting Allan J. Laws was chosen mayor and Barnett was named vice mayor, both reelecting themselves to their posts. The council again failed to reorganize itself last week due to a lack of quorum compared with neighboring General Law cities.
Pasadena City College announces a four week phone switchboard techniques course at the Community Add Training Center on W Nlake Ave. The class meets seven hours daily from 9 to 12 in the morning and from 2 30 in the afternoon Monday through Friday starting May 4.
