Indian and Metis Fishermen Upgrade Skills in Northern Communities
The conservation education branch of the provincial Mines and Natural Resources Department ran a program from June to October last year that trained about 200 Indigenous and Métis fishermen in 15 northern lake communities. Four Indian speaking instructors lived in each community for three to four weeks, teaching voluntary methods to boost catch quality and quantity, including larger use of ice packing and single-boat crews. Split Lake saw success with one man per boat and six nets per boat. This year five instructors are planned to work in at least 12 communities.
