Corporal Bayles Promoted at Camp Zama Japan
Camp Zama Japan corporal G Bayles, son of Mr and Mrs Golden Bayles of Parowan Utah, was promoted while serving with the 8000th Army Unit. A clerk-typist in the adjutant general decorations and awards branch, Bayles completed basic training at Fort Lewis Washington and was last stationed at Fort Lawton Washington.

Captain Daryl R. Halterman of Parowan Utah completed primary pilot training at Malden Air Base Missouri and is taking basic multi engine training at Goodfellow Air Force Base Texas. Naval NROTC Applications Open Across Nation
The Navy announced the ninth annual NROTC examination for high school seniors to enter college with government aid in fall 1955. Applications are due by November 20, with testing December 11. About 1,800 will be chosen for appointments to Regular Navy or Marine Corps. midshipmen receive $600 yearly retainers and full tuition, with Navy training cruises in summers.

Stanley F Benson succumbs in Veterans Hospital
Stanley Forester Benson born June 22, 1843 in Salt Lake City area, dies in the Veterans Hospital after two years of poor health and a month of serious illness. He served in Europe in World War I, was a charter member of American Legion Post No. 20, and is survived by a brother and two sisters. Funeral services set for Parowan Third Ward Chapel with American Legion military rites.

Quick Action Saves Large Haystack at Gurr Farm
Parowan volunteer Fire department battled a fire at the Gurr Farm Thursday afternoon in a chopped hay stack. Moisture from the last rain caused spontaneous combustion. The Gurrs aided with a caterpillar to clear fences and move hay. After about five hours the fire was under control. About 150 tons of hay valued at 20 to 25 dollars per ton burned 10 to 12 tons. The farm insures buildings but slacks likely not insured.

Last Rites Held For Annie West
Funeral services for Tryphenia Annie West age 85 lifelong Parowan resident were held in the Third Ward Chapel. She died Saturday at Iron County Hospital after years of delicate health and long nursing care. Born Sept 2 1869 to William and Tryphenia Hobbs West she lived in Parowan most of her life and resided at the Iron County Rest Home the last decade. A devout LDS member she is survived by nieces and nephews including Ray Bentley Parowan Edward Bentley Provo Douglas Bentley Provo Wesley Bentley Los Angeles Mrs Clara Luke Heber Mrs Ruby Thompson Oakland Mrs Lizzie Hall Salt Lake City Mrs Pearl Banding Milford and Mrs Nellie Moritan San Diego. Bishop Howard M Adams presided with organ music by Mrs Orna Johnson. Opening song Oh My Father was sung by a mixed quartet including several locals and Ruth Jenson. Mary Lyman at the piano. Invocation by Kenneth Joseph. Speakers John W Bentley Harley W Dalton. Ramona Bentley Smith sang Hold Thou My Hand with accompaniment by Mrs Berta Winter. Ancel J Adams gave the benediction and at the cemetery Jess W offered the dedicatory prayer.

Greyhound presents the Scenicruiser, a twin diesel powered coach with air suspension and raised observation deck. Local representative R L Fenton reports the first unit is part of 500 built for nearly 25 million dollars, with initial service planned between Chicago and Los Angeles via Las Vegas Salt Lake City and Omaha starting September 5.
