The court schedule shows three criminal cases to be tried next week starting Monday morning. John R. Hulse and Frank Huddleston are set for trials with various legal representations listed. An expanded juror pool includes thirty extra names to cover the proceedings.
At the Southern Utah Livestock Show in Cedar City the Flapvan FFA Chapter placed second in the livestock judging contest. The chapter bought a Hampshire Ram from the BAC to use for future shows and to help train future lamb producers. Several donors including Scott Day Warren Pendle and Evans contributed funds and seed donations to assist the chapter. Oleen Hatch and Buddy Orton reported on events. notes mention Decker's travel from Lake City and Betty Marie’s baptism.
Region Six schools announce a wave of new coaches for the coming winter. Claude Adams notes replacements at several schools including Panguitch, Kanab, Hurricane, Milford, Hinckley, Cedar George, and Panguitch veteran ties.
Mr and Mrs Silas T Orton announce the marriage of their daughter Retta to Joseph Gadert of Los Angeles. The wedding will take place in Los Angeles on Sunday September fifth. Gadert is an engineer with the Federal government and the couple plan to reside there after their visit to here in October. Retta, the Ortons only daughter, trained in beauty culture in Los Angeles after graduating from Patowan high school.
Parowan Exchange Club calls a special meeting in the county courthouse courtroom at 9:30 p m Monday night president Ivan Decker announces. All members and interested residents are urged to attend to discuss important community progress matters.
The Mutual Improvement Associations of West and East wards plan their opening social Tuesday evening starting at 4 30 with a short program and officer introductions in each chapel. A play Little Casting directed by Jean Hendrickson will be shown at Westward recreation hall followed by dancing and refreshments. Returning service men and townspeople are urged to attend. East ward officers and staff are listed including Arthur Evans president and Ray H Adams Scoutmaster. West ward reorganization is expected soon with Alvin Decker and Della Marsden in leading roles. A statewide M T A convention for officers and teachers will be held in Cedar Third ward chapel on September 29.
Several more local men who spent time on battlefronts returned during the week. Sgt. Mark Gudmundsen and Sgt. Claude Matheson are noted as the first two of Mr. and Mrs. David A. Matheson’s six sons to be released. Gudmundsen, a former heavy bomber gunner, came home early in the week and plans to work on cattle ranches in San Juan County after a rest. Matheson, part of the Army Air Force training command, returns from duty in the southern Atlantic states. Also home is DeLoy Guymon after a year and a half in service, including a year with the Americas Army in Italy. Sgt. Leonard S. Orton returns on a thirty day furlough after about three years in the Army, with major time in France, Germany and Austria, belonging to the 14th Armored Division and later the 7th Army drives. The Orton family in Salt Lake was told he would visit as his brother and sister-in-law host them.
Region Six high schools meet at Parowan High to map football and basketball schedules. Northern group includes Cedar City Parowan Beaver Milford Hinckley with October games and a regional final against the Southern group Dixie Hurricane Kanab Orderville. Parowan coaches prep twenty players as Ram’s opener looms October 10 at Beaver. backfield leaders and linemen named for early trials.
Homer Stubbs a Seaman Fleet class and his wife Mrs. Stubbs spent two weeks visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. Chester Stubbs in this area. He was on leave from his base at Clearfield Utah after entering the Navy on Mothers Day 1944 and training at Farragut. A shower was held for the bride at the Stubbs home with many relatives and friends attending.
Bishop Jess Guymon of Parowan East ward announces Mrs. Edna S. Hatch and W. Clair Rowley as principal speakers for Sunday Sacrament meeting on Sept 23. Home from service will be allowed to speak. Ramona Mitchel and Bertha Sue Hatterman will perform a piano duet. Ward members urged to be present.
Utah schools will release junior and senior students for half days to help farmers with carrot and potato harvests amid a severe labor shortage. The plan, part of War Fund Sunday activities, runs through harvest season with shuttles from Parowan High School and a 8:30 start, 12:30 finish schedule, and 1:20 field pickups.
Funeral services were conducted in Paragonah and Milford for Mrs Zola Miller Lund 43 wife of Mercill Lund after her death September 15. Bishop Leonard Topham led Paragonah services with speakers Carlyle Granning and Thomas A Robinson. A Milford service followed with Vera Bond obituary and musical selections. Survived by husband and seven children Phillip Mardell Lanse Ray Connie and Marlene plus father David Miller and many siblings. Large turn out from Milford Beaver and area.
Mrs. Jean Hendrickson announces success of the salvage drive conducted through local school classes during the first three days. A total of 4500 pounds of paper were collected and sent to Cedar City by Marla Topham, with nearly a truckload of tin cans also shipped. This final scrap salvage drive ends with war over, fats drive to continue.
Taylor Maller of the Parowan West ward bishopric announces Claude and Homer Adams will speak at the Sacrament meeting Sunday afternoon September 23. Claude recently moved back to Parowan to teach after years away, Homer was released from the U S Army. A strong ward attendance is urged. Mire Laura Paramore has been improving after coming from Southern California and her husband took her to the county hospital for observation.
